New Orleans Bowl, 12/20 @ Lafayette, LA
Southern Mississippi won this game last year, 31-10, as 6-point favorite over North Texas, the perennial Sun Belt champ. This is first time in New Orleans Bowl history that North Texas isn't the Sun Belt representative; Arkansas St somehow won tiebreakers and is playing in their first ever bowl game, despite losing 38-10 at Army and winning a home game 3-0 in OT. Sun Belt clubs are 1-3 in this event, losing by 25-10-21 points.

Southern Miss is also 6-5, but had its life disrupted by Katrina, with two games postponed by hurricane issues; four of its last five games were decided by four or less points, as dogs covered five of their last six games. Eagles are in eighth bowl in last nine years, but they played in this bowl last year (although game was in Superdome, not Lafayette) and I am somewhat concerned that Southern Miss might not be as into this as they should be.

One power poll I read has Arkansas State #108 in country; they are definitely worst team in bowl this year, losing 44-17 to only bowl-type team they played, when Missouri gained 657 yards, and Missouri isn't that great a club either. ASU played easiest schedule in country, had many tense wins. I don't like to give a lot of points in these bowl games, but don't think Arkansas St can run on Bower's defense. Sun Belt site helps ASU a little, but if I had to play this game (and I think it is bad game to handicap) I would probably lay the points before I took them.

Tuesday's List of 13: Random thoughts on winter's 1st day
13a) One of the few non-sports TV programs I watch is The West Wing, so it is with sadness that we start today on down note, as actor John Spencer passed away this weekend. Not only was Spencer brilliant as Leo McGarry, he was also Billy Crystal's refereeing partner in Forget Paris. He'll be missed.

              13) Bowl games start Tuesday night, with Arkansas State-Southern Miss in the New Orleans Bowl, from Lafayette, LA. Check out the college football page on this site, for analysis on all 28 bowl games.

              12) If I were Phillip Rivers' agent, I'd ask the Chargers if he could play Arena Football this winter, to sharpen decision-making skills, and get some game action in. It has been two years since he's played in a real game. Rivers has to be traded soon, but his value has to be going down, with every day he sits on the bench.

              11) The most interesting coaching jobs the last two weeks of the season will be ones in Dallas and Kansas City, where older coaches who have won Super Bowls try to keep their teams' playoff hopes alive. Both teams had dismal performances in Week 15; it will be interesting to see if either team has anything left in its tank.

              10) Why don't the Browns have a logo on their helmet, and why do the Steelers only have their logo on one side of the helmet?

              9) As a Ram fan, I want no part of Dan Reeves as head coach. Think out of the box, people, come up with the next Jim Mora Jr or Lovie Smith. No retreads. How about Jerry Gray, the defensive coordinator with Buffalo? He played for the Rams, and Buffalo has a good defense.

              8) If you owned the Vikings, would you bring Mike Tice back as coach? I'm asking you, because I am torn 50-50 on whether I would or not.

              7) If I owned an NFL team and was looking at college game for a head coach, I'd point my jet to Fresno and hire Pat Hill. Iowa's Kirk Ferentz will also get mentioned; both have ties to the Belichick Browns (with Nick Saban).

              6) Right now, looks like Patriot-Jaguar Wild Card game, with winner going to RCA Dome to face the Colts. Not sure Colts are too excited about that prospect.

              5) If the Bengals were in the NFC, they'd be an odds-on favorite to reach the Super Bowl.

              4) Must be fairly depressing to be a Lions' fan, as they finish another dreadful season, this one with an interim coach and a 37-yard QB who would have trouble hitting the ocean, even if he was standing on a beach. Does Matt Millen have the onions to bring Mike Martz in as coach?

              3) What happened to the Raiders? I figured they'd at least be lot of fun to watch this year, but they're not good, and not close to being good.

              2) I'd be surprised if #18 for the Colts played a full game at Seattle this weekend. Seahawks opened up -6.5, which means our friends in Las Vegas don't think so, either.

              1) Having thirteen games on Christmas Eve is the kind of thing that used to get me in trouble, back when I was married, but with Christmas on a Sunday, it had to be done this year. Short week for 23 of the 32 teams, with Patriots having nine days to prepare.

Georgia State is 2-5, 1-1 in CAA, splitting home games vs Delaware (99-72), George Mason (81-51). Panthers' only road game was 85-58 loss at Alabama. Drexel went to Muncie last year and beat Ball State 74-70 as 4.5-point dog. Streaky Dragons won first three and last three games, and lost five in row in between. This is game Providence needs to win, and it won't be easy.

Iowa is 8-3, holding Arizona State to 12 first half points in last game; they lost other two in-state rivalry games this year, both on road; here they face Drake squad that Hawkeyes beat 91-75 last year, as 7-pt road favorite. TCU won last two games after 1-4 start that included losses to Tulane and D-II Tarleton State; they're 0-4 if they score less than 70 points, and facing Colorado team with ten seniors on it. Buffs are 6-1, winning five in row since 83-82 loss at Colorado State, with wins by 19-18-18-24-16 points. A 78-60 win at Penn is their only road win.

New Orleans is in freefall, losing last six games vs D-I teams, including 68-56 loss in last game, to injury-riddled Purdue; without star G McCalebb, Privateers scoring just 63 ppg in those six games. Vanderbilt is 6-1 with a win at Georgetown, so they're pretty good, but none of their last three wins was by more than sixteen points.

Louisiana Tech came to Memphis last year and beat the Tigers, 64-55, as an 11-point dog; they won last five games overall, including easy 68-53 win at Texas Tech; they have one of better players in country in PF Millsaps; their only road loss is 59-56 at Nebraska. Memphis is lot better than they were last year, at 7-1, with only loss 70-67 vs Duke; their two home wins are 79-52/ 108-83.

UNLV ended five-game losing streak by waxing Texas Tech Saturday; they're 3-5 overall, beating Tech, Long Beach, Hawai'I, all at home; their only home loss was vs Nevada . Four of their last five opponents scored 72+ points.

Holy Cross beat a poor Chattanooga team Monday, 82-65; now they go way up in class and face Clemson club that had glorified scrimmage in Monday win over PR-Mayaguez, and is 9-0, with 82-63 win over South Carolina their best win. Tigers have three starters back from 16-16 club that was hot at end of last season and has carried the good play over to this season.

Akron is 3-2 vs D-I teams, losing 89-75 at Cal, 111-85 at Louisville; they allowed 62,61,61 points in their three D-I wins. Mississippi State recovered from pair of bad home losses to win five games in row, beating poor Liberty squad Monday; two of their last four wins are in OT, but they won those games by 13,11 points. With five new starters, hard team to figure.

Middle Tennessee is 4-2 vs D-I teams, losing 85-79 in OT at still-unbeaten Indiana St, and 79-61 at Utah State, after having upset Aggies 60-59 at home. Louisville played soft early schedule, then went to Rupp and got spanked by Kentucky in last game, 73-61; four of their six wins are by 17+ points. Cardinals' non-league schedule is really weak, in first season as Big East team.

Charleston led at halftime Saturday at VCU, lost 76-71; they're now 0-3 vs D-I teams, with losses vs Charleston Southern (82-77), at NC-Greensboro (72-58) and at VCU. Cougars are down somewhat, face Florida Atlantic squad that is 3-3, with losses by 10 (@ Northwestern),4,18 (@ South Florida) points, and three close wins.
