Another winning day on Wednesday, 2-1 (+2 units). These are my plays for Thursday......
5 STAR: SAN FRANCISCO (RUETER)(-$130) OVER New York (Leiter)
After being swept by the Expos, I really like the Giants to get back on track in this game against the Mets. The Giants are 10-3 against the Mets over the last three seasons, including 6-0 at home. Kurt Rueter in his last two starts against the Mets is 2-0 with an ERA of 1.15. Rueter is also 13-2 versus a National League team with a team batting average of .245 over the last three seasons and is 24-7 when playing against a team with a losing record over the last 3 seasons. The Mets are 1-9 as a road underdog this season and Al Leiter is 1-7 as a road underdog the last three seasons. Al Leiter is also 0-5 in his last five starts against the Giants. Look for the Giants to get the win here.
3 STAR: Houston (Oswalt)(-$150) OVER PITTSBURGH (BENSON)
Kris Benson is only 2-6 against Houston with an ERA of 4.83. He gave up 6 runs in his last outing against the Astros and did not get out of the third inning. Benson is also only 1-7 versus National League teams that are scoring 4.8 or more runs per game over the last 3 seasons. Roy Oswalt for the Astros is 4-2 against Pittsburgh with an ERA of just 2.41. Pittsburgh is also only 3-11 at home when the total is 8.5 or less this season. Look for last years Oswalt to show up today.
2 STAR: MILWAUKEE (SHEETS)(+$170) OVER Chicago (Wood)
I have to take a shot with the home underdog in this spot. Ben Sheets has owned the Cubs, going 6-0 lifetime with an ERA of 2.72. Kerry Wood is only 4-6 lifetime against Milwaukee. The Cubs are only 14-26 versus a National League starting pitcher whose ERA is 4.20 to 4.70 over the last 3 seasons. Also, the Cubs have only swept a series against the Brewers once in the last seven years.
