Iowa G Horner is out for while with sprained knee ligament; he scored 14 ppg last year, so that hurts 7-2 Hawkeye squad that lost in OT at Northern Iowa earlier this week. Hawkeyes are 5-3 in last eight series games, splitting last four in Ames. Cyclones are 4-2 after winning at Drake 84-74 earlier this week.

Fullerton State is picked by some to win Big West this yr; they just lost 84-59 at Kansas State, not good sign. Chicago State upset Illinois-Chicago team that had just pounded Georgia Tech by 21, so they have some talent, but are picked 7th in MCC that usually is highly competitive.

San Francico beat up on Texas Tech last week, 90-72, but then lost at home to Wichita during week, they're 2-5 and struggling so far. New Mexico State off to 2-3 start under first-year coach Theus, losing only road game by 13 at UCLA; they beat rival New Mexico in their last game, good step for them.

Niagara is 5-0 vs Siena last two years, winning at this site, 81-66 and 72-68. Saints playing hard under McCaffery; they're thin but shoot well, and won last three agmnes, allowing 63 ppg. Niagara lost last three games, scoring just 61 ppg, as their top three scorers from last year are gone.

Manhattan is overscheduled and 0-4, losing to pair of Big East teams, URI and George Mason; they're 5-1 in last six games vs Marist, winning last four at this site by 32-25-21-5 points. Marist is 2-1 so far, losing first game to Ohio U Tuesday; they're picked #4 in MAAC, Manhattan is picked second.

St Peter's is 4-2 vs Canisius last three years, going 2-1 on road, with games having average total of 165. Peacocks won 72-60 vs Monmouth Tuesday, good win for them, behind prolific scoring G Clark. Griffins lost in double OT to FDU last week, their fourth loss in row to start season. MacDonald is 99-137 in his 9th year at this school; how does he keep his job?

Fairfield is 1-3 to start season, as most of MAAC seems down; they beat nomadic Tulane team 80-68, but lost to St Francis NY, a bad loss. Stags are 8-0 vs Loyola last four years, but Loyola is most improved team in league, off to 4-0 start, although they're playing lame schedule, but still, 4-0 is 4-0, when they've won 22 games total in previous five seasons.

Friday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but.........
                          13) Bob Huggins to UNLV makes too much sense to actually happen. Lon Kruger and Gucci Row go together like Pamela Anderson and Pat Robertson.

                          12) Note to Congress: A little less time with steroids and the BCS, and a little more time on lowering gas prices and getting our people out of Iraq. Just a suggestion.

                          11) Imagine working in Marlins' sales department this month? I mean, Dontrelle Willis only pitches every fifth day. What else do they have?

                          10) Before the Spurs hired PJ Carlesimo as assistant coach a few years back, they offered the job to Penn's Fran Dunphy, who turned them down.

                          9) NBA needs to go to international rules; 20' 9" 3-point arc, 30-second clock, play any defense you like. The international game is just more fun to watch.

                          8) Speaking of which, NBA also needs to stop fining players for wearing their shorts too long. Being a 45-year old suburbanite who wears shorts below my knees, because they are comfortable, I don't understand why this is any issue.

                          7) Would it be legal if Texans' owner Bob McNair went to his coach, Dom Capers and told him, "Dom, we'll keep you for another year, as long as you make sure we get the #1 pick in draft…"

In other words, as long as he didn't win any more games and got Reggie Bush in the draft. Would this be slimy?

                          6) When Capers is fired after this season, Mike Martz will be the ideal replacement, as long as Houston trades that draft pick for multiple selections, and drafts an offensive line.

                          5) If you tell me that Martz already has a job, I'll tell you that his office in St Louis has already been cleaned out, and Rams are just waiiting until this dreadful season is over to put an end to Martz Madness, a very interesting, but flawed era.

                          4) Mark Redman got traded this week from Pirates to Royals; at least in Pittsburgh, he got to pitch to opposing pitchers.

                          3) Pirates also traded lefty pitcher Williams for Sean Casey; do Buccos have enough depth to trade two starting pitchers?

                          2) When a pitcher signs with the Rockies as a free agent, you know his career is almost over. Enter Jose Mesa.......

                          1) What if George Steinbrenner went to Bud Selig, suggested that baseball have a salary cap? Is it possible that this would actually help the Bronx franchise, driving their costs way down, while not really affecting income that much?
