Wednesday's List of 13: Random thoughts on cold day........
              13) Bengals, through 12 games, have +24 turnover ratio (37 takeaways, 13 turnovers), an amazing figure. Plus, they have a good offense, and may be underrated, at this point, due to their past history of failures.

              12) Bears have shut out four of their 12 opponents in second half of their game.

              11) Now we hear that there are anonymous scouts who preferred Ryan Fitzpatrick (7th round pick, Harvard) over Aaron Rodgers (1st round pick, Cal); where were these geniuses last April, when the draft was on TV, or in the 7+ months since, before Fitz threw for 310 yards in his debut? Anonymous people are always so smart, after the fact.

              10) Texans started four drives in Baltimore territory Sunday, scored nine points on those four drives, a poor result, especially when you realize they lost 16-15. Whoever replaces Dom Capers has a sleeper on his hands; you get the idea that the right coach could made a dramatic improvement quickly with this Houston team, but they'll need to draft linemen to protect David Carr.

              9) The next two Sunday night games: Lions at Green Bay, Browns at Buffalo. Why?

              8) I read today that the Raiders might sit Kerry Collins, and let young Tuiasosopo play at QB, which led the writer to suggest Green Bay do the same with Brett Favre, so Rodgers could get some snaps. Anyone that equates Favre with Collins should lose his writer's privileges.

              7) Baseball bigwigs have scheduled the World Baseball Classic in March, but for most part, it won't conflict with March Madness, except that semifinals are on Saturday of the first weekend of NCAA hoop tournament, but probably after the hoop games are over. Will fans take to this event, or is it just another lame plan to promote selling MLB merchandise around the globe?

              6) Fittingly, Alex Rodriguez hasn't decided yet which country to play for. Whichever one puts poker table in the clubhouse first? By the way, if he plays SS, does this create controversy in the Bronx?

              5) If I owned a big league ballclub, wouldn't mind my position players playing in this tournament, but wouldn't want any pitchers going; they're fragile enough as it is. Guys don't normally go 5+ innings until mid-late March, so it'll be interesting to see how that works out.

              4) I wonder how excited NC State players are to be going to a bowl in Charlotte.

              3) Some of the coaches' ballot in the college football poll became public. SMU coach Phil Bennett puts Oregon 15th; Steve Spurrier put Notre Dame 14th, Clemson 24th and his Gamecocks 21st, even though Clemson beat Carolina; Mack Brown and his brother Watson (coach at UAB) both put USC #1, Texas 2nd.

              2) Why would anyone in media waste their time complaining about the poll in basketball? Hoops has a tournament, the polls are irrelevant; if not for the scroll on ESPN2, I wouldn't even know who was ranked where. They don't matter.

              1) Our favorite college basketball team, the Allegheny Gators (3-3, 1-0 in NCAC), take the floor tonight for a non-league tilt with the high-scoring Westminster , who are averaging 114 ppg. Gators lost at Westminster last year, 135-128.
