Pepperdine lost two of first three games, losing only road game 76-66 at Fullerton; Waves allowed 75-76-76 points so far, so the defense is lacking. Dayton won at Cincinnati for first time since '71 Tuesday night; they're 2-0 at home, beating Tennessee Tech 81-60, Morehead State 67-41.

Seton Hall is picked to finish 16th in Big East, which is never a good thing; Pirates lost 77-71 at home to Richmond in opener of last season. Spiders have new coach, now run Princeton stuff; they're 2-1 so far, scoring just 48.3 ppg. Seton Hall has three Ws over MAAC schools and a 93-40 loss at Duke.

Kansas beat Nevada 85-52 last year, avenging loss at Reno from previous season; Jayhawks have ton of new guys- they lost to Arkansas and Arizona in Maui, beat Idaho State before they got to Maui. Nevada is 3-0 already, having won at both Las Vegas and Vermont, as well as over Sacramento State.

Fordham won 64-59 at Iona last year as 12-point dog; things are not going as well for Rams this year, as they lost last two games to St Francis and Siena. Gaels routed Iowa State in Ames over weekend, also beat Portland State. Rams are 1-4, with only win vs Norfolk State, 72-53. Only thing preventing me from making play on Iona is erratic history they've had in past seasons.

Appalachian State lost Monday in double OT at James Madison they're 2-2 this season, also losing 91-78 at Wake, but they're a pretty good team, beating Little Rock, VCU. Tenn-Martin lost 78-61 at Louisville; they had 11 guys start six or more games a year ago, so they some experienced players.

Austin Peay beat Tennessee Tech 67-61 in OVC semifinals last year; teams split home wins during regular season. Tech is 2-0 at home this season vs D-I teams, routing Oregon State 90-62 and upsetting Wisc-Milwaukee, 72-67. Peay is 0-3 on road this season, with all three losses by 20+ points.

Denver lost at home to Colorado State Saturday, 64-58; Pioneers are picked to win their half of Sun Belt- they beat Southern Miss 44-30 in game this season. Northern Arizona lost to Air Force by 13, Tex-Arlington by 9, but they've won three in a row since.

First road game for Boise State, which lost at home to Weber St, 66-61 ten days ago. Broncos have three starters back from 16-18 team that was upset 64-59 by Idaho State last year, when ISU was 11-point dog. Bengals lost 90-66 at Kansas, then played a pair of cupcakes; no way to know much about them.

Thursday's List of 13, clearing out a cluttered mind
                      13) When a team like the Lions fire their coach in-season, so the assistants spend more time preparing for the next game, or trying to find their next job?

                      12) Alex Rodriguez makes $16,492.58 per inning played.

                      11) I wonder how guys like Elway, Jordan, Mike Schmidt deal wth their lives after their playing days are done. Do they get bored easily? Is there something in their lives that stimulates them the way being the best in the world did? Jusr curious.

                      10) Does Bob Knight enjoy coaching basketball? Is it fun for him? Is anything fun for him?

                      9) Before what percentage of games does Toronto Raptors' coach Sam Mitchell look out on the court and say, "There's no way we're going to win this game...." Might be a lot......

                      8) Best tickets for Bronx baseball team's home games next yr are now over $100 apiece. Imagine paying $110 to see a game with the Devil Rays on a Tuesday night in May?

                      7) ACC won their week-long series vs Big 11 once again, 6-5 this year. It is seventh year in row ACC has won the event.

                      6) When Kevin Brown signed that seven-year contract worth $105 million in '99, hope he got on his knees and thanked the Lord that there were still stupid people on this planet.

                      5) Giants are only team in NFL that is 9-2 vs spread this year. Jets are only team that is 2-9 vs spread, worst in league.

                      4) Packers have scored 232 points given up 223; they're 2-9. Vikings have scored 198, given up 257; they're 6-5. Go figure.

                      3) Phil Dawson of Cleveland is the only kicker currently with a job who has missed two PAT's this season (13-15). He has made 20 of his 21 field goal tries, though.

                      2) Bengals, with 33, have five more takeaways than any other teams in NFL, with Panthers, Giants having second most.

                      1) Does Paul Tagliabue kick back on Sundays, put his feet up while watching DirecTV and say, "Damn, I have a good job"?
