  • George Karl Suspended!!!!!!

NEW YORK -- Denver Nuggets coach George Karl was suspended for two games without pay by the NBA on Wednesday for publicly criticizing officials after a 101-92 loss to New Jersey.

Karl was to begin his suspension with Wednesday's home game against New Orleans, and sit out a game at Phoenix on Friday.

Following Monday's loss to New Jersey, Karl suggested Vince Carter flopped twice during the game's final minutes. Karl was also ejected for arguing when Kenyon Martin was whistled for fouling Carter with 1:05 left.

"There's a rumor out of the league office that we're trying to take flopping out of the game, but I don't think that was orchestrated very much in those two calls," Karl said.

Personally I don't think any coach, manager or even player in any sport should be fined or suspended for criticizing an official after the game is over.
Its a free country and free speech does exist.
Karl takes a big enough chance by pissing off the ref for possibel future calls;why punish him for simply stating his opinion.
I don't see baseball managers usually getting thrown out of games for questioning an ump's call unless they resort to namecalling, etc.

Actually what I would like to see is for an OFFICIAL to get suspended or fined for making a verified lousy call or trying to show up a coach or manager!

Savage- How About We Don't Have Anyone To Enforce The Laws In The United States????????????? No System Is Perfect But Officials At The Pro Level Are Right Over 98 Per Cent Of The Time, Proven Fact, I Will Assume You Had A Lapse In Judgement

Bud-My point is that I think anyone should have a right anytime to criticize/offer an opinion anyone about anything subjective in our society without being punished.
Laws and enforcing them are a entirely different issue;there is nothing subjective about whether it is ok to steal, murder, rape, etc.
ps Your 98% overall may or not be correct, but we all know there are some officials who are below that number.

YOU NEVER HEAR OF OFFICIALS IN ANY SPORTS ABLE TO USE FREEDOM OF SPEECH TO CRITICIZE PLAYERS, FANS, OR COACHES, IT IS AN UNSPOKEN TABOO FOR THEM TO DO, THEY SHUN DEFENDING OR EXPLAINING THEIR CALLS TO THE MEDIA, IT JUST ISN'T THE PLACE TO DO IT, IT IS RESPECTING THE GAME, AS FOR 98 PER CENT, I USED THE MAGAZINE/BIBLE OF OFFICIALS "REFEREE MAGAZINE"

Bud-you are forgetting one game, and this is agreed upon by many:
Even if officials don't criticize players AFTER the game, some show an air of cockiness and arrogance during the games that they are infallible and are very quick to toss a player, coach or manager who questions their decisions;in essence some officials think the game is about THEM;is this not showing up a player in the same way that a player or coach is by questioning or criticizing a call?
To use an another analogy, I personally can't stand folks like Rush Limbaugh, who blasts certain democrats whom I respect
Yet I think he has every right to express his views without fear of punishment.
To me this situation is not that different;I say if a coach or manager thinks an official blew some important calls, he is within his legal rights to say something after the game.
In some cases if enough players, coaches or managers criticize an official who is habitually bad, the league will take action against the OFFICIAL and NOT the people who level the criticism.
Officials are employees like everyday folks, and if they err or someone thinks they have erred, I think they should be cited.
Speaking of criticism, I think David Stern is a truly horrible commisioner with totally screwed up and misplaced priorites;now someone from BC go ahead and fine me or suspend me for saying it.

Based on what I saw last night in the officiating in The Spurs game(I have no ax to grind as I didn't bet the game), I maintain what I said about Stern being a truly lousy commissioner and not having a clue as to where his priorities should lie.
To me he is too concerned with suspending coaches like Karl for a few post games remarks and NOT concerned nearly enough about taking measures to protect the integrity of the game and/or calling into question officials and possibly players whose motivations may not be honorable.
At the very least it is apparent that some of the calls made by some of the officials raises the question of their competency and especially at key moments in the game.
