Wednesday's List of 13: NFL by the numbers.......
                13) The best, most dramatic golf tournament of year starts Wednesday; no Eldrick Woods, no Lefty, no galleries, for most part. Q-School, a six-round, 108-hole marathon of skill and nerves, will determine the last thirty guys who get their card on PGA Tour next year.

I believe 58 players have gotten through the first two stages of Q-School, to reach this final stage. Those who don't get PGA Tour cards will get Nationwide Tour cards.

                12) It took over $500,000 in earnings to make the cut (#125 or higher) on this year's Tour, so there are some pretty strong players fighting to get back in where the bigtime money is.

                11) So far, thru 11 games in NFL, Denver is the king of first drives, outscoring their opponents 62-7 on first drive of each half; they've outgained them, 857-399, with each side having 22 first drives so far in '05.

                10) NFL halftimes are only twelve minutes, so not like ton of adjustments can be made, but Jaguars have outscored foes 35-6 on first drive of the second half, while Titans have been outscored 46-7 on their first drives after halftime.

                9) Minnesota was -11 in incomplete passes thrown in seven games Culpepper started; in four games that Brad Johnson started, Minnesota is +30 in IP's; safer routes, moving chains more, while defense is playing much stronger.

                8) In 11 games, Arizona has allowed seven TD's and a field goal on their first drive of a game, yielding NFL-worst 58.3 yards per opening drive. Their first drive of third quarter isn't much better, giving up 50.5 yards per drive and 42 points (both 31st). Cardinals have been outscored 94-30 on their 22 half-opening drives.

                7) This is how good Chicago's defense is; Carolina is second in NFL, allowing 4.00 points per red zone possession. Bears are first, at 2.96 ypp. That is big gap between first and second place. When a team gets inside Bear 20, giving up a FG would then be disappointing to the Bears. Wow. Chicago is also 1st in 3rd down defense (28.1%), TD% allowed (7.5%) and are in top five in 10 other categories I charted this weekend.

                6) The six worst teams in incompletion ratio all have losing records; Arizona (-69) is worst, followed by Eagles (-50). Of the top six in IP ration, only the Rams (6th) won't make the playoffs, while Chiefs (2nd) are still fighting for a spot.

                5) Colts have scored 38 offensive TD's this year; if you combine the TD's scored with FG tries of the other 31 teams, eight of the 31 totals are 38 or less.

                4) Quite a battle for the Mike Martz Trophy, given to the team with most turnovers each season. Saints (28) are still hanging on to the lead, but 49ers (27), Packers (27), Jets (26) and Martz' current/former team, Rams (26) are in there competing for the trophy. Whoever wins it will probably drop it.

                3) Miami has been inside opponents' 20-yard line 33 times this year, has scored 110 points (3.33). Seattle averages 3.44 yards per drive on drives that start 80+ yards from end zone.

                2) Four teams have started 20+ drives in enemy territory this year, and lo and behold, they are the four pleasant surprises of 2005: Bears, Bengals, Giants, Jaguars. Funny how that works.

                1) In college basketball, Bucknell beats Kansas in NCAA's last spring, so two teams cancel home games with the Bison; that's how hard it is for these mid-majors to get a decent schedule. After winning at Syracuse, Bucknell will have it even harder. Winthrop went to ESPN and basically said they'd play anyone, anywhere to get on the network, but ESPN couldn't find a taker. Life is good when the big boys are ducking Winthrop.
