Georgia State beat UL-Lafayette 85-78 last year; Panthers 1-1 so far, losing 73-68 at home to Charlotte, after they beat Delaware, 99-72 in their opener. Hofstra beat St John's last year, 78-68, as 9.5-pt favorites; they lost 69-50 at Notre Dame, after beating FIU. St John's is 3-0, with wins over Eastern Shore, St Francis and Niagara, the latter two revenge wins after last year's disaster. Hofstra has four starters back from last year's 21-9 team.

Cincinnati off to 3-0 start under Kennedy; this is toughest test to date, vs Dayton squad that lost at home to Bearcats 65-55 last year, as 7.5-pt home dogs. Flyers lost double OT game at Creighton Saturday, 91-90, their second road loss in two tries. Dayton has four starters back from 18-11 team.

Clemson beat Ohio State in ACC-Big 11 Challenge last year; the Tigers are 4-0 vs cupcakes, but they did win 68-56 at Charleston Southern Saturday. Penn State is 3-0, also vs little competition; they have four starters back from 7-23 team. Clemson has three starters back from 16-16 club.

Illini were lucky to beat Wichita State at Padre Island, but they pounded on Rutgers after that.

Miami didn't play in Big 11 Challenge last year, and Michigan lost by 31, so some would argue they didn't play either; Miami is 4-2, coming off loss at Temple Sunday- they have four starters back from 16-13 team. Wolverines are 3-0 after ragged year last year; they have whole team intact, and should be good team.

Santa Clara beat San Jose last year 73-60, as 15-point favorite; Broncos are 1-1 vs D-I teams, beating Pacific 63-60 after losing at Cal Poly. San Jose is off to 3-1 start, with wins over Portland, San Diego and Cal Poly, losing only 88-54 at Texas Tech.

How many websites write up Chattanooga-Middle Tennessee and don't charge you? One, you're right. Anyway...........

Chattanooga got blown out by Grier-less Minnesota 67-46 three days ago, their third loss in row (64-48 at Miss State, 93-79 at home to Belmont). MTSU lost 85-79 in OT at Indiana State three nights ago; they upset Utah State at home in their opener, very good win for the Blue Raiders.

Tuesday's List of 13: Random thoughts from world of sports
              13) The Colts are 11-0, so the media is going to go nuts about their chances of going 19-0, and being first team ever to do so My question is this, at some point, would it help them win the Super Bowl if they lost a regular season game?

              12) 19-0 could become a distraction on their road to being the Super Bowl champion, but losing, in itself, is rarely helpful, and certainly not this late in season. My thought would be that a loss, at this point, would not help the Colts very much, although it would put their focus solely on the Super Bowl, and not making history, which is largely irrelevant.

              11) Vikings are 4-0 with Brad Johnson at QB, but it is defense that is propelling the Vikes; their three TD drives Sunday vs Cleveland were 35,17 and 32 yards. Special teams, defense are creating short field opportunities, which lead to wins.

              10) As a Ram fan, was excited by young Fitzgerald's showing at QB Sunday, but Texans gained 412 yards vs horrendous Ram defense, when Houston hadn't gained as much as 300 yards in any game this season. Sweeping changes are needed under the Arch.

              9) If you like investing in halftime lines, keep in mind that in Rams' last nine games, the average amount of points scored in the second half is 28.3 points, a very high total.

              8) We say that Carolina is struggling last two weeks, but at a closer glance, we see that they've really been struggling a lot longer, but were bailed out by their defense; in last two tilts, when Panthers scored one TD, they started seven of their 19 drives 80+ yards from goal line, and none in enemy territory.

In the two games before that, when we were told how potent the Carolina offense was, they actually started six drives in enemy territory, and only three 80+ yards from end zone. Lot of times, defense and special teams set up the offense, either to succeed or fail.

              7) Will Tulane keep football? The school is having major $$$ problems, due to Katrina, and football may be a victim, which has rival schools circling like vultures for their players, who would not have to sit out if they transferred, providing that the Green Wave drops football. Sad situation, filled with lot of unethical behavior, and other neat stuff like that.

              6) Ole Miss is one of the main teams looking for players; now there is some debate that Coach Scelfo invited this back after Katrina hit, saying that he would look out for his kids, should Tulane drop the sport, but they haven't dropped it yet, and they may not. Very touchy situation.

              5) UNLV came to its senses and named their basketball court after Jerry Tarkanian, who put the school on the national map in late 70's, winning the national title in 1990. Its about time.

              4) When Ohio State beat Virginia Tech Monday night, it was just the Big 11's 20th win in last 54 games of the Big 11-ACC that happens this week every year.

              3) Peyton Manning is first QB since Steve McNair in 2000 to win three Monday night games in the same season.

              2) Want to laugh? Check out this link to the Emory & Henry basketball team's stats; the Wasps are averaging 129.3 ppg, giving up 129.8 ppg. Interesting way of playing ball.

              1) Once again, it is totally amazing that Steve Mariucci gets fired, and Matt Millen gets five-year extension; Millen was a loud know-it-all when he announced for FOX; now he has proven himself to be incompetent at leading a franchise, but brilliant at keeping himself employed. What a world.

Joe, great info...BTW, I think Indy goes undefeated and feel Peyton is the cog and motivation to it...I just don't think he'll allow any let down. These guys have always been labeled one way or another...good O, bad D, QB can't win the big one, good team, bad team, Patriots door mat...I'm sure more...Dungy himself has had to bear some criticism as well...

In a nut shell, I'm betting these guys are constantly telling themselves that NO ONE wants them to win or thinks they can win the SB...SELF MOTIVATION w/ no egos or agendas other than winning the SB...the focus has become sharper as we've seen each week...they find ways to win and adjust accordingly to who they play and don't have worries cuz the D knows Peyton can toss, Edge can run & all those WR's & TE's can catch...linemen are stellar. D showed me something last night & to see they are close to leaders in league in D...WOW...but that's Dungy just like w/ the Bucs...

I'm rooting for it cuz my boys are excited due to the history of it happening only once...I want it for them cuz I'm not sure it'll happen again or in my life time...

                Thx Joe!!
