IMO it's hard to base this decision strictly off stats. The game was played in different eras. The bottom line. Only one team has gone undefeated. For me that is the determining factor.

BTW stats often lie. How many times has the team with better game stats lost?

Regular season you are correct...but I think my points even get stronger when you take into effect that they shut out 2 playoff teams and demolished the AFC representive in the Super Bowl while Miami struggled in all three games.

Agree on the undefeated statement...but against weaker teams IMO.

The Bears put up much better offensive number...they put up better defensive numbers, they scored on special teams twice compared to the Dolphins none.

does the better team always win? No...just ask the 85 Dolphins. They were not better then the Bears all year...just that game.

I think to determine the greatest team one has to factor how the team did a year or two before and after their dominant year.

Dolphins won back to back superbowls. They were a dominate team for a few years.

Same with the 90 Cowboys. They put together many impressive years.

One can't say that about the Bears. In 84 they were shutout in the conference championship game. In 86 they lost in the divisional playoffs.

never said they didn't qualify...but losing more then one game like that I think puts things in perspective.

The 85 Bears lost one game that year and that was to Miami, who went 12-4 that year.

The Dolphins played in a very week divsion and conference where only 5 teams were above .500

they had a weak schedule and although they couldn't do anything about that...they certainly didn't dominate the way the Bears did in 85 in a tougher schedule based on opponents winning percentage

85 Bears were the best defense in the history of the NFl against the run....running is just about all the 73 Dolphins had....

You put the two teams together on the field in their prime, and the 85 Bears would cripple the Dolphins.

I disagree...we're talking about the best TEAM in history..not the greatest ERA, or Dynasty. If your talking Dynasty...then I have no argument...Bears were unfortunatly a one hit wonder...BUT in that year...they were the best ever.

            Two different eras.

I will say this. It would e a low scoring game.

The best teams now beat the 85 Bears. The 85 Bears beat the 72 Dolphins

I agree on the low scoring game....

I don't agree that the best teams now beat the Bears....I think Dallas in the 90's would be their toughest opponent....

But yes, the 85 Bears would beat the 73 Dolphins in my opinion, and in such, I would crown them the best team ever.....

Dallas in the 90's had the best offensive line in history (imo). A Hall of Fame QB, Hall of Fame WR, Hall of Fame RB AND, he is the All Time leading rusher playing IN HIS PRIME at that time. They also had a Pro Bowl TE and a Pro Bowl Fullback. Possibly the BEST offense in History. The Defensive line was tremendous and so was the secondary. The LB's were very solid as well and Special Teams were very good as well. Coaching (IMO) GOES EASILY TO J. Johnson. He showed he could do it year after year and continue to build. He probably had more assistant coach's go on the be the head coach of other teams as well. It was an All Star Staff!

Once you get beyond defense i think the argument gets weaker. They liked Gimmicks. An aging Payton couldn't even get the ball in the big game and who were their receivers, Willie Gault and Who??? I just don't think they would beat that Dallas team!

The players of today are bigger and quicker than 20 years ago.

                      I agree 1000%

The Bears defense was the greatest in NFL history. However, if the 90s Boys and the 85 Bears played the Bears would get trounced. The Boys offensive line was huge. The undersized Bears defense would get pushed around with ease.

I think we also have to look at the Steeler teams in the 70s and the 49er teams in the 80s.

What about Green Bay in 1966? I was too young. I'm sure some older guys might be able to make an arguement for the Pack.

                                92 cowboys vs 85 bears

In Chicago...bears won 5 Dallas won 4, and Dallas ran the ball for an average of 140 yards per game

In Dallas...bears won 7 of 10 and Dallas had an average of 124 yards per game.

                                Foolproof...no..but i'm up for suggestions?
