One thing the last two days have hammered home; Princeton offense is tough to prepare for in single day, and hard to chase those backcuts this early in season, if you played the night before.

Florida doesn't have star power of past years, but they're good on defense and are balanced on offense; their first two wins are St Peter's, Albany, no great shakes. This is very young Florida team. First road game for both them and Wake Forest, which got OT scare from George Mason in their second game. Deacons are replacing Paul at PG, which isn't easy, and they haven't been a good defensive club, even with Paul. Both sides are replacing three starters.

Syracuse was life-and-death to beat Cornell in second game up at Dome; they looked shaky vs zones, but Texas Tech doesn't play zones. Red Raiders killed San Jose and beat Ga. Southern by 13; they have three starters back and four other guys to go with good group of newcomers. Syracuse goes as McNamara goes; when he struggles with his shot, they have real trouble scoring. Orange will have home crowd on their side at Garden. Syracue is less experienced but deeper this season.

Sam Houston went to Missouri and won 80-77; Drexel won by 54-41 at Princeton, outrebounding Tigers 45-15. Princeton shot just 10-30 on treys. Dragons lost more than 50% of their points from last year, but have solid junior guards. Bearkats got 28 pts from Bright (6-7 on treys) and led Missouri throughout, opening up 32-27 halftime lead. Drexel played just seven guys; CAA is a stronger league, but Sam Houston's win was more impressive.

Excellent matchip of guards in Memphis-Alabama game; Tigers had easier-than-expected win over UWM, while Bama beat a solid Miami, OH club. Tide has three starters back, two inside guys and best PG in SEC, but they're thin and may struggle to make shots, especially early on. Memphis has ton of talent, but will they have good chemistry? First road games are often big problem. Memphis needs win over SEC team, because C-USA will be weaker now, so Tigers' RPI could use some help here. Memphis held Milwaukee to 22% from floor Tuesday night.

UCLA has one day to prepare for Temple's matchup zone, very tough to prepare for in short period of time. Bruins won against New Mexico State because they beat Aggies down floor a lot, which will not happen here. Tough travel for Owls, who won their game, then travelled cross country- their first game was a very easy win over outmatched Army. Temple returns 94% of its scoring from last year; they averaged only nine turnovers per game. UCLA will have trouble running if they don't get TO's.

Montana State has all five starters back from surprising second place Big Sky team, and are favored to win league. Big Sky clubs can be erratic, but Bobcats have four seniors who played junior college ball two years ago, then adjusted well to D-I last season. Illinois-Chicago plays in Horizon, a better league; they have lot of new players, after slipping from 24 to 15 wins last year. This is in Alaska, which means Montana State will have more fans and lot shorter trip. UIC has edge in class.

Thursday's List of 13: On Duke, talk radio, media nitwits
              13) Saddest thing about the Duke athletic program is that the best QB on campus, Greg Paulus, plays hoops, not football.

              12) Duke freshmen basketball players are not allowed to have cars on campus as freshmen (Coach K's rule) forcing them to be dependent on older players for rides. Interesting rule.

              11) Think back to the early 80's; Coach K didn't make NCAAs until his fourth year at Duke. In today's culture, where there is no such thing as patience, would he have gotten fourth year in Durham?

              10) Seton Hall beat Manhattan, which means almost nothing after their 93-40 loss at Cameron. At 1-1, the Pirates are worse off than if they were 0-0, for sure, all of which cannot do a lot for already shaky job status of Louis Orr, a genuine nice guy.

              9) I mean, Boston U. hung in pretty well against Duke in their first round NIT game, and BU isn't even the favorite in their league, the greatly diminished America East.

              8) Sam Houston State at Drexel, 8pm Thursday, just like the folks at ESPN planned it. Interesting game, though, teams like Sam Houston don't get chance to improve league's power rating very much, but they can here.

              7) Speakiing of ESPN, it would be interesting to ask football coaches in MAC how much they benefit from these games on weeknights. Does it really help their programs, and if so, how much does it help?

              6) Oregon State QB Moore is out for Saturday's Civil War tilt at Oregon, but Beaver coaches are very high on his backup, Gunderson, so Oregon State might not be hurt too badly- in ecent weeks, they had been turning ball over a lot, anyway.

              5) Media nitwits were quick to bash the Mets' acquiring the versatile Xavier Nady from San Diego; it must be easy to sit back and just take shots at everyone, since half of all teams that play get beat, so there's always someone to bash.

              4) Nady hit 13 homers for the Padres; not all that bad, when you consider how spacious Petco Park was. Plus, I have the idea that Nady may be part of another package the Mets are putting together, for, say, Manny Ramirez?

              3) There is growing speculation that Herman Edwards will be sought after to be Chiefs' head coach should Dick Vermeil choose to retire. Edwards did nothing to stop that talk in his Wednesday talk to media, so now the Jets have a distraction on top of all their injuries. Edwards is popular amongst his players, so if this rumor has teeth, it it bad news for Jets.

              2) Of course, the media nitwits were quick to say that while they like Edwards, in no way is he a good enough coach that you'd be upset if he left. I wonder what they'd say if they did not like him. Lot of naysayers in this world. They love you win or tie, and they're not that craxzy about ties.

              1) Interesting move by NFL, surprisingly giving Chiefs shot at hosting Super Bowl, which is backwards way of saying that they're going to blackmail Kansas City politicians to fund stadium improvements, including a retractable roof. This is a handout to Lamar Hunt, who actually named the Super Bowl; they're expected to host either the 49th or 50th Super Bowl.
