Wednesday's List of 13: Random thought as we head west
                13) What in the name of Major Ogilvie is going on here? Mark Gottfried, basketball coach at Alabama, now makes more money than any member of the Crimson Tide athletic department, much to the surprise of that football-crazed state.

                12) Sam Houston State 80, Missouri 77. The Quin Snyder Job Watch is officially underway in Columbia.

                11) I didn't know Mike Martz took up coaching basketball. Indiana Pacers were up 8 points with 0:49 left at Milwaukee the other night and lost; how does a veteran team blow a game like this? They missed 10 of last 16 free throws, and intentionally fouled a 3-point shooter when they were up four with 0:09 left. Whoops.

                10) NFC playoffs are already taking shape: Seattle is in, Bears look solid, which leaves six teams, all from East or South, battling for four positions. Well, after the Eagles' loss Monday night, make that five teams for four spots.

                9) AFC has Colts in, Denver in, Patriots probably in, then five other clubs battling for three slots. Of course, this all changes weekly, but there does seem to be little more of a gap between the haves and have-nots this season.

                8) At what point will the Jets have to consider that Chad Pennington is too injury-prone to be their franchise QB? And if they do, will they trade for Philip Rivers?

                7) Older coaches don't like younger players. Romeo Crennel (in his late 50's) is delaying the Charlie Frye era in Cleveland, but he may be hurting himself in the process. Browns need to go into this offseason knowing whether Frye can play or not. With seven games to go, wouldn't this be a good time to find out? I mean, they're 3-6, so they're not making the playoffs.

                6) Marvin Lewis' biggest problem with the Colt game this week will be how to deal with the fallout of the result; if they win, players will think they've already won the Super Bowl, when they haven't won anything yet. If they lose, how does he build them back up to realize that the race is still on? Either way, it'll be challenging for him.

                5) As a Ram fan, it is somewhat disappointing that we had Lovie Smith as an assistant, and let him get away. He seems like a good head coach. Ram management will be challenged this winter to find a new leader for the team, and at same time rebuild cohesive organization that has become dysfunctional with infighting since the glorious '99 campaign.

                4) It is very possible that South Florida, which has been I-A in football for less than ten years, will be in a BCS bowl game. Bulls already buried Louisville this year; they'll need to beat West Virginia Dec. 3 to get to the big money bowl.

                3) Bill Snyder built Kansas State into a college football power (133-68-1) when he had inherited a hideous, loss-infested program. What he did was simply amazing, and maybe the greatest rebuild job in college football history. Snyder is stepping down; hopefully, the folks in Manhattan will name something large after him.

                2) Think about the Hayden Fry coaching tree for a minute: Snyder, Barry Alvarez, anyone named Stoops, Kirk Ferentz; the Stoops branch gets you Mike Leach, Mark Mangino and Brent Venables (who will probably replace Snyder). Seems like the pink locker rooms weren't Fry's only contribution to college football.

                1) Congress talked, and baseball balked, but then buckled; a 50-game ban for first time steroids abusers, and a lifetime ban for third-time offenders. That should take care of that.

They have been talking this for a couple years now. He (Quinn Snyder) is definitely on the clock!

Definitely an amazing job by Snyder. They say he was a hard man to work for though. I would think you would have to be to turn around a program in that bad of shape in Manhattan, Kansas of all places!
