Western Carolina has just 10 scholarship players, as new coach Hunter got late start in recruiting; he will be familiar with this foe as he coached a while in MAC, but he is shorthanded this year. Will Hunter run Princeton offense he used as assistant while at NC State? His returning shooters shot just 31.6% behind the arc last year. Bowling Green lost six of top nine scorers from 18-11 squad; this is also a rebuilding year for them, as they will have seven new players on their roster.

Georgia Southern was 18-13 last year and has 39 wins in last two seasons; they have 5-9 guard who scored 20.9 ppg last year and is explosive scorer. Eagles are deeper this year, but need to play some better defense. Portland was 15-15 last year, best mark in last nine years, even though they lost eight games by five or less points; Pilots have senior backcourt and return their top 5 scorers from last year, as well as a 6-11 transfer from Oregon St.

Cal-Irvine was supposed to have four starters back from a 16-13 team, but best guard Gloger blew out his ACL then got mono, which postponed the surgery until July, so he is out here. UCI still has decent talent; they won their tuneup game 94-56 over D-II Pomona. George Mason has all five starters back from 16-13 team that went 10-8 in CAA- they're more of offensive team. This game is at Wake Forest, so Mason figures to have some fans, while Anteaters flew cross country to play.

Mississippi Valley State is now coached by James Green,. the former Southern Miss coach who will have Delta Devils playing more defense, with less chuck-and-duck. Eight of MVSU's top 10 scorers return, so they have talent. Remember that Green was 123-109 at Southern Miss, so he can coach. Wake Forest is the #22 preseason team, but they lost four key guys from last year, and move Gray to PG to replace Chris Paul, no easy task. Wake's starters are older players, but their subs will be young.

San Jose State was 6-23 last year and has just 12 wins the last two years; they have new coach who is trying to recruit high school kids instead of JC guys. Spartans have three returning senior starters, but they were 303rd in nation in scoring last yr, so they have long way to go. Bob Knight teams often oppose themselves as much as the enemy, especially early in a season, as Knight imposes his will on them; Texas Tech has talent, but no seniors; they have lightning quick PG and two other starters back from l;ast year's 22-11 team. This should be an easy game.

Albany beat Oakland 90-73 yesterday, now they move way up in class and face mighty Gators in Gainesville, after Florida won 80-51 over St Peter's. Great Danes made 13 of 19 treys last night, but got outrebounded by Oakland, and now face Gator squad that is improved defensively- they held St Peter's star Clark to 11 points on 4-17 shooting. Albany played only seven guys 10+ minutes yesterday. This is gravy game for them, but America East dogs (Vermont, BU) have fared well in past few seasons.

Thursday's List of 13, random thoughts on a rainy day
                13) One of the disturbing trends in modern sports is that teams own the media outlets their games are shown on, which allows them to control what is said on their airwaves. This curtails free speech, and is a sad development. Dallas Maverick announcers are not allowed to talk about player salaries, which, in a salary cap world, is highly relevant information. That's too bad.

                12) What would happen if starting lineups were announced at an NBA game without music, spotlights and other theatrics? What if a team had a throwback night, and the game was actually the show, instead of an intrusion on the production the PR department puts on? Would this be a bad thing?

                11) Basketball and baseball players have it made, with all their guaranteed money; very few NFL players have guaranteed contracts, and they play the most dangerous sport. You have to feel for Priest Holmes if his career has indeed ended.

                10) Instead of firing the two cheerleaders from Restroomgate, what if Carolina just traded them to the Vikings? Who would object to this? Don't these women have rights? Think of how they would fit in with the Vikings.........on second thought.....

                9) In 11 seasons as head coach at Michigan State, six of Tom Izzo's assistant coaches have become D-I head coaches, which increases his chances of other well-qualified coaches wanting to join his staff.

                8) Larry Brown, despite being an odd, little man who wouldn't play Wade, Lebron or Amare in the Olympics, has had 29 winning seasons in his 33 years as a head coach, a superior coaching record. In eight of his 23 seasons as an NBA head man, Coach Brown has started 0-3 eight times, which is really an odd stat, even for an quirky guy like Brown.

                7) If you want to see the final table from last July's World Series of Poker, ESPN has it next Tuesday. Nine guys are left from the original 5,600+ entrants, with all nine earning at least a million bucks; the winner took home $5M.

                6) How mainstream is poker? Pepsi will be running an ad campaign around ****** Chan, Doyle Brunson and Phil Hellmuth, who combined have won 29 WSOP bracelets.

                5) The rising popularity of golf, NASCAR and poker all trace back to the nightmare job that baseball has done of policing/ marketing its product, allowing these challengers to chip away at their audience. Once undisputed king of American sports, baseball is now like the rich old aunt who gets drunk at family gatherings; you show her respect for her age, but really are kind of glad when she goes home.

                4) Speaking of cars, how come no one has opened a service station where the help runs out and works on your car like a NASCAR pit crew? Wouldn't it be awesome to have your car serviced in 19 seconds?

                3) In last six Louisiana-Lafayette football games, five were decided by exactly three points.

                2) Denver Nuggets were once the Denver Rockets; Houston Rockets were once the San Diego Rockets; LA Clippers were once the Buffalo Braves, Sacramento Kings were once the Cincinnati Royals, Atlanta Hawks were once St Louis Hawks, Washington Wizards were once the Bullets. San Antonio Spurs were once the Dallas Chapparals. And those are just basketball franchises.

                1) Flex TV scheduling begins in NFL in Week 11 next year, when league will be able to move games around to create more attractive primetime matchups. Final details have not been resolved, but it appears as if FOX and CBS will be able to protect five games from being moved, over the course of seven weeks. For instance, if NBC wants a Patriot-Colt afternoon game moved to their airwaves at night, CBS could block it, but could only do that five times a season. Will be interesting to see how this works out.

Wednesday's List of 13: NFL by the numbers........
                  13) Colts, at 8-0, seem to be legit threat to run table in regular season, with road tests at Cincinnati, Seattle their hardest games left. Indy has converted 38 of last 56 (67.9%) third down plays, so their offense is cranking up. Best way to attack their defense is with the long pass, as Rams did before Bulger was injured.

                  12) Want an underrated stat? Incomplete pass margin. The combined record of the top six teams in IP margin is 32-17, combined record of six lowest teams is 16-32. Every IP is play that gains no yards. if you have a lot less than the other side, only logical that you would benefit from it.

                  11) In their last four games, 49ers have totaled 234 passing yards, or 58.5 yards per game. Not very good. Then again, they've started four different QB's this season.

                  10) 12 of the 14 Baltimore-Jacksonville games have been decided by seven or less points.

                  9) Not only are Vikings 0-4 on road, all four losses are by 20+ points.

                  8) Tampa opponents respected Brian Griese's passing, which helped the running game. With Greise out, that respect is gone, and Bucs ran ball 38 times for 87 yards in two games since Greise got hurt.

                  7) In their last two games, Carolina averaged 11.0/11.3 yards per pass attempt. Not yards per completion, yards per pass attempt.

                  6) Good news for Detroit is that their defense has stopped opponents on 28 of last 34 third down plays, and Lions are
+ 7 in turnovers last six games, but bad news is, despite those important numbers, Detroit is still 3-5 and sinking fast, with very little competent play at QB position. Lions have four TD's on their last 48 drives.

                  5) In last 2:00 of each half in their eight games, Seattle has outscored opponents, 54-3.

                  4) Patriots' defense is ranked 29th in third down defense, 31st in red zone defense and has allowed 28+ points in four of last five games. Their lack of running game exposes the defense even more.

                  3) Surprising that teams QB'd by Plummer (6) and Collins (7) have fewest giveaways of any NFL teams. Less surprising that Arron Brooks' Saints lead NFL with 27 turnovers.

                  2) Eagles are 15-6 vs spread in games that immediately came after their last 21 losses.

                  1) In six games Ben Roethlisberger started, Steelers are 24 for 67 (35.8%) on third down, not a great number, but eons better than what they are (1 for 20) in two games he missed.
