    MONDAY, OCTOBER 17 - MLB

    National League

Houston* (Pettitte) 13.78 (1/2) St. Louis (Carpenter) 13.43
    Total Runs: 5 1/2

Astros Slight Favorite In Game 5

The Cardinals' season has come down to Chris Carpenter. Down 1-3 in the series, St. Louis will turn to its ace tonight to try to stay alive. They couldn't have a better option. The 21-game winner has won both his postseason starts, including Game 1 of this series. And he shouldn't be intimidated by being at Minute Maid, where he is 4-0 with a 0.84 ERA in four career starts in Houston. Carpenter will go against Andy Pettitte, who wasn't sharp in his Game 1 start, allowing five runs over six innings. But Pettitte had been hit on the knee during batting practice, which may have affected his control. He's expected to be sound tonight and should more closely approach his regular season ERA (1.35) against the Redbirds. And against an offense that is struggling to score runs, that could be good enough to get Houston to its first World Series. Dunkel has the Astros favored by 1/2 a run with a run total of 5 1/2.
