No one in MLB will ever have the balls to admit they F'ed it up.

Too bad they can't give umpires an error like they do the players.
Your forgetting 2 important factors in your statement...

    1. No instant replay for anyone to see a 90 MPH ball hit dirt or not...

    2. The umpire was behind catcher not in front of him to see if it did hit...other umpires in field are 90+ feet away and also have a split second to decide conclusively if the ball hit dirt?? NOT...

In conclusion, the Catcher makes a tag, ALWAYS, or throws to 1B ALWAYS to eliminate any question or debate...

Further, GAME OVER & in the BOOK...game 3 coming up.

A smart catcher knows 100% when he's cleanly caught the ball. If he thought for even a nanosecond that the ball touched the ground he would have fired that ball to 1st base on instinct alone.

A smart catcher who all season long has heard umps yell in his ear "NO CATCH" when there is need to throw the ball to first and who didn't hear it last night after the batter missed and he cleanly caught the ball did what he knew was the right thing to do, roll the ball to the mound because the inning was over and the batter was out.

I think everyone is throwing too much blame on the catcher .. he did his job ... he caught the ball, the umpire called him out and the inning was over ... If he had any doubts that the ball hit the ground he would have tagged him ... Put the blame where it belongs .. on the umps .. they have 4 guys on the diamond and still can not get it right ...

Now i hear the home plate ump said he did not give a verbal call ... Never heard of that ... and Like I said I have been umping a long time ... First base ump gives an out sign, does that mean he has to say it also??? Ridiculous MHO

                1. Wrong, there IS instant replay, we were all watching it all morning. I recorded it, I watched it frame by frame. It may not be allowed by MLB, but there is instant replay, and it's conclusive.

                2. This is why MLB needs instant replay. Umpires can't be expected to make such judgements and World Series titles are on the line. Too bad they don't have the balls to admit they need help to make sure they get the calls right.

Yes, the catcher makes the tag when the ump yells no catch or the ball clearly is dropped or gets away. But in this case, the ball was caught, the ump signaled the batter swung and missed, the ump did not yell 'no catch', the batter was out, end of inning.

No great shakes to me, I had no cash on the game, but this is just another black eye for MLB.

the replay looks like the ball hits the webbing of the glove and then moves into the pocket of the glove.

the catcher knows he caught the ball....the umpire didn't give any indication that he thought the ball wasn't caught......plus he motions that the batter is out.......

it wasn't the catcher that dropped the ball.....it was the UMPIRE that dropped the ball!!!

A smart catcher knows 100% when when he's cleanly caught the ball? A smart catcher knows that what he knows or thinks doesn't mean diddily. A smart catcher knows it's what the umpire thinks. He had the opportunity to take the doubt out of the call and he did not do it. If a smart catcher catches a ball anywhere near the ground he does the safe thing to take away any doubt. Even if he thought the umpire made a call i have seen umpires make a call and then immediately reverse themselves.
