Hard to sum up all the great finishes there were Saturday, on a day where it seemed no lead was safe...........
13) Unbelievable end to first half in Michigan State-Ohio St game, and someone might lose their job over it. Spartans had a 17-7 lead, were driving, when instead of spiking ball to stop clock, they ran field goal team on field, and rushed their field goal attempt.
Not only did the 12th man not get off the field, but field goal was blocked and run back for TD as time expired in first half, cutting lead to 17-14, when it could have been 20-7. Whoops.
12) Michigan State coach John L. Smith was then interviewed by a sideline reporter as he left field; he was screaming, very upset, saying, "THE PLAYERS ARE PLAYING THEIR TAILS OFF, AND THE COACHES ARE SCREWING IT UP!!!!"
11) USC goes for it with 0:07 left. Not sure it was the smartest thing to do, but it worked, ending an epic battle between the spunky underdog and a team that isn't as good as it has been the last two years, but is still pretty darned good.
10) By the way, Notre Dame should trade it in its goofy green jerseys for a couple of lawnmowers. Cows would have been in heaven grazing on grass that is so high, officials' shoes disappeared when they walked. Shameless gamesmanship.
9) Michigan beats Penn State with dramatic 10-yard TD pass on last play of game, not only handing Lions their first loss, but keeping Wolverines from rare 3-4 start, endangering their 30-year consecutive bowl streak.
8) Wisconsin trailed 34-24 with 3:27 left, then blocked a punt for TD with 30 seconds left, to shock Minnesota, 38-34, in a result that was totally amazing, even if you saw it live. Very bad loss for the Gophers.
7) Wake Forest led 17-0, led 30-21 midway through fourth 1/4 but lost at Boston College, 35-30. Wake never quite finishes the deal- they're 2-5 now, and they're not a bad club.
6) Louisville led 17-0 at half in Morgantown, wound up losing 46-44 in OT to West Virginia team that now has leg up in the Big East race. Cardinals are bullies at home, 0-2 on road.
5) Cody Hodges of Texas Tech was 44-65 for 653 yards thru air Saturday, as Texas Tech's aerial circus decked Kansas St, 59-20. Tech faces the Texas Longhorns next Saturday.
4) My favorite college football name? Ole Miss wide receiver Taye Biddle.
3) Is anyone in Syracuse missing Coach Pasqualoni yet? The Orange are 1-5, got blown out by Rutgers at home. Not good.
2) UCLA stayed unbeaten, rallying from 28-14 halftime deficit to hand Washington State its third loss in row. They've won last two games, but barely, as they tempt cruel hand of fate.
1) Howie Long's son Chris is a defensive lineman at Virginia (#91) and a very good one. Cavaliers had great win Saturday, upsetting the Seminoles, who looked like young team they are in suffering their first loss of season.
