          Week 5 NFL action
Strange week, where only two of 14 spreads are four points or higher.

Bears (1-2) @ Browns (1-2)- Both teams coming off their bye; Browns are 1-3 after bye, with favorites covering all four games. Chicago lost last three post-bye games, but only twice in their last ten post-bye tilts have they lost by more than three points. Teams met only once, with Mike Brown scoring on OT INT in 27-21 Bear win during their 13-3 season four years ago. Cleveland getting outrushed by 52 yards/game; they haven't turned ball over in last two. Bears led 31-6 at half of their win, had no points at half of their losses- they lost only road game 9-7 at Redskins. Browns lost only home game, 27-13 to Bengals.

Buccaneers (4-0) @ Jets (1-3)- Testaverde gets nod at QB for Jets, which means more blitzes for Bucs, I would think. Gang Green running ball for just 68 yards a game; until they get viable passing threat, that number won't go up, especially vs Tampa defense that has allowed just three TD's on 42 drives this season, and have yet to allow more than 260 total yards in any game. Tampa was bailed out by replay reversal in final 15 seconds last week; they had minus-3 turnover ratio, still won, which doesn't happen much. Under is 4-0 in Buc games, 3-1 in Jet games. Jets won seven of last eight in series, including last five in row, with three of last four by four or less points.

Saints (2-2) @ Packers (0-4)- In four games (240:00) so far this season, Packers have led for exactly 6:00; they lost last three games by total of six points, and are on short work week here, after futile comeback Monday night. Pack has minus-9 turnover ratio (32nd), which has led to field position deficits in every game- they're 3-12-1 vs spread in last 16 pre-bye games. Saints on road for fourth game in five weeks, but they had good win last week; they've lost last six games in Wisconsin, but they do have training camp in the Dairy State, so some familiarity there. Five of last six series totals are 55+.

Seahawks (2-2) @ Rams (2-2)- Big game in NFC West, winner is in first place. St Louis beat Holmgren three times last year, coming back from 27-10 deficit in last 5:00 at Seattle, then stopping Hawks inside 10-yard line at end of playoff game for another win there; in game at St Louis, Seattle was horrible in red zone, in game they controlled from line of scrimmage. Rams are back to old tricks, with nine turnovers in last two games, after a better start- this is just their second home game. Despite giving up 17.8 ppg, Ram defense is improved (T4th in 3rd down defense, seven takeaways in four games). Seattle is 0-2 on road, but they have some good numbers, rushing ball for 135.5 yards per game, outscoring foes 24-3 in last 2:00 of halves. Coach Martz has ben hospitalized with infection in heart; status for Sunday unsure.

Patriots (2-2) @ Falcons (3-1)- If Pats weren't champs three of last four years, would be easy to dismiss them here, as they have 31st-ranked red zone defense, have yet to run ball for 80 yards in game, are allowing 27 ppg (12 TD's/47 drives) and have been minus-2 in turnovers in each of last three games, while defense has just three takeaways in four games. Falcons won both home games, allowing 10 points in each game; they've run ball for 200+ yards in three of four games are 15 for last 26 on third down and are +9 in sacks (17-8). This is their first turf game of year, also. You need strong playmakers on defense to stifle Vick, and Patriots' best two are out for the season.

Dolphins (2-1) @ Bills (1-3)- Dolphins are 1-6 SU in last seven post-bye games, 2-8 vs spread in last ten; they lost only road game 17-7 at Jets; Fish completed just 44.7% of passes in last two games, but have average rushing edge of 120-76. Miami split last six visits to this site, with none of the six decided by less than seven points; of 35 opponents' drives, 17 started 80+ yards from end zone, so Saban doing well with field position. Bills lost last three games, passing for total of 203 yards, so they have QB controversy, with only two TD's on last 30 drives. Without star LB Spikes (out for year) defense has allowed 211 rushing yards per game the last three weeks.

Ravens (1-2) @ Lions (1-2)- As bad as Baltimore offense is, (441 total yards in last two games, no first half TD's all season), odd that defense has just one takeaway, and team minus-7 turnover ratio. On 36 drives, Billick's offense has three TD's, 16 3-and-outs. Defense has allowed just 70.3 rushing yards/game and been good 69.7% of time on third down, but team is struggling. Detroit had winning TD pass overturned by replay with 0:13 left at Tampa last week; they've been outscored 21-0 in last 2:00 of their six halves, and are one of two NFL teams with zero points on drives (seven) that start 80+ yards from goal line. First series meeting since 1998.

Titans (1-3) @ Texans (0-3)- Houston swept the old Oilers last year, their first wins in six series games, but both sides are down this year, as Texans have scored just three TD's on 26 drives, failing to score point on five drives that began in enemy territory- they've been outscored 17-0 in last 2:00 of halves, 49-10 in first halves and have yet to average four yards per pass in a game. Titans lost both road games so far, allowing 32.5 ppg; they've had field position edge, with +14 ratio in black zone drives, but they've also allowed 8.1 yards per pass or worse in three of four games. Three of last four series totals were 51 or higher.

Colts (4-0) @ 49ers (1-3)- Hard to dismiss any NFL team, but this might be 1-32 matchup, if league were seeded. Rookie Smith gets first NFL start here, vs Indy defense that has given up two TD's on 47 drives and allowed just six first half points. 49er defense tired last week, could melt vs Colt no-huddle that averaged 9.9, 9.8 yards per pass last two weeks. Niners have been decent at home, scoring six TD's on 22 drives, splitting pair of 3-point decisions, but they've been hit by injuries and have subs vs All-Pros in this matchup. Oddly, Colts lost last four visits to this site, last winning with John Unitas at QB in '68. Niners 12-2 SU before their last 14 byes.

Panthers (2-2) @ Cardinals (1-3)- Short week, long travel for Carolina club that survived Favre and Packers late Monday night; Panthers won previous visit to this site, 20-17 two years ago. McCown won his first '05 start, now 6-7 as NFL starter; Arizona covered just one of last six pre-bye games, has just three TD's on 49 drives, but Rackers, their PK, is 16-16 on FG's. Carolina lost only road game 27-24 at Miami; their run defense has been hurt by loss of DT Jenkins, but not sure Arizona (75 rushing yards/game) can exploit that weakness. Field position been key for Carolina; they were +16,+5 in wins, -18, -11 in losses.

Eagles (3-1) @ Cowboys (2-2)- Philly turned 17-0 deficit into wild 37-31 win at Arrowhead last week in serious statement win; they have outscored foes 58-10 in second half of games. Eagles won nine of last ten vs Dallas, winning last three by average score of 32-13. Eagles won four of last five visits to this site, with all four wins by 24+ points; only loss came when they onside kicked to open game, and Dallas ran it in for TD. All four Cowboy games been decided by six or less points, with dog 4-0 vs spread; they scored 13 points in both their losses, 28,31 in their wins. Eagles have run ball 35 times in last two games, passed 102 times; they're 1-4 vs spread in l;ast five pre-bye contests.

Redskins (3-0) @ Broncos (3-1)- Portis-Bailey trade reunion here, so Denver will be eager to run ball well, vs Redskin defense that has allowed just 83.3 rushing yards per game. Skins allowed six first half points and four TD's on 29 drives overall, but has just two takeaways. Not excited to give seven points to 3-0 visitor that is finding ways to win; Redskins are 2nd in NFL in third down conversions (49%) and 3-0 despite minus-4 turnover ratio. Denver is last (27.5%) in third down conversions, 27th in red zone defense but they're also 2-0 at home, both division games. Might they be looking ahead to next week's Patriot visit?

Bengals (4-0) @ Jaguars (2-2)- Another unbeaten road dog; Cincy lost last six visits to this site, with five by 8+ points; Bengals have been winning by using takeaways (17, +13 turnover ratio) to create short fields for offense (nine drives started in enemy territory (T1st)), but they've also had ability to drive field for scores (three 80+-yard TD drives, with three FG on ten black zone drives). Jags held last three foes under 4.5 yards per pass; they scored 26 points in both wins, 3 and 7 in losses; they turned ball over seven times in last two games, after being flawless in first two. Bengals just 6 for 24 on third down last two games; they're 2-0 on road (27-13/24-7).

Steelers (2-1) @ Chargers (2-2)- Over last four years, Steelers are 37-11 from bye until end of their season, winning three of last four post-bye contests. Pittsburgh won nine of last 11 games vs San Diego, winning last four, all by 13+ points; last time they lost to Chargers was '95 AFC title game at Three Rivers. Bolts are NFL's hottest team right now, scoring 86 points in waxings of 3-1 Giants and champ Patriots last two weeks, outscoring foes 48-3 in second half of those games; they've scored 10 TD's on their last 19 drives. Steelers are plus-7 (8-1) turnovers but have struggled (7 for last 24) on third down, while opponents are 16 for last 31.
