  • Thursday NCAA Football - 10/6

I'm passing on the MLB playoffs today, I can't seem to buy a win in baseball right now. Only playing tonights NCAA Football game. This is my play....

    NCAA Football

3 STAR: NC State (+4.5) OVER GEORGIA TECH
    Risking $330 to win $300
    Line from BetJamacia on 10/5/05

The Wolfpack come into this game with only a 1-2 record on the season and Georgia Tech has owned this series winning 10 out of the last 13 meetings straight up and going 10-2 against the spread in those games, but I like the Pack to at least keep it close. NC State has been one of the best defensive units in the nation the past few seasons, and they are off to another strong start this year despite the team only being 1-2. NC State is only allowing 20 points per game on 260 total yards per game. The Pack also has seven takeaways and ten sacks while only allowing a 22 percent success rate of third down conversion attempts by their opponents. NC State held Virginia Tech to only 20 points in their opener and the defense played much better than the 31 points surrendered would suggest in their loss to the Tar Heels as North Carolina scored one of their touchdowns on a blocked punt and another after a fumble deep in NC State territory. Georgia Tech's offense was totally shutdown by the Hokies in their last game. Coming back from a bout with viral meningitis, Tech quarterback Reggie Ball completed just 11 out of 27 passes for 143 yards and a meaningless touchdown and threw interceptions on consecutive attempts in the third quarter that were returned for touchdowns by the Hokies. I expect a better showing out of the Georgia Tech offense, but I think that NC State will be able to hold them in check. On the other side of the ball, the Yellow Jacket defense is another solid group, but NC State quarterback Jay Davis leads the ACC in passing yards per game at 267 and has passed for 200 or more yards in 10 of his last 11 games totaling of 2,575 yards and 13 touchdowns during that span. He played good enough to win against Virginia Tech's tough defense in the Wolfpack's opener completing 27 out of 44 passes for 311 yards and I look for him to be able to do the same here against Tech. Road underdogs of 3.5 to 10 points in conference games that are coming off of an upset loss as a double digit home favorite are 26-4 against the spread since 1992 and NC State coach Chuck Amato is 11-0 against the spread as a road underdog as the coach of the Wolfpack. Take the points!

    2005/2006 NCAA FOOTBALL RECORD

    5 STAR RECORD 3-6 (-19.00 UNITS)
    3 STAR RECORD 7-3 (+11.10 UNITS)
    2 STAR RECORD 3-1 (+3.80 UNITS)
    1 STAR RECORD 3-2 (+0.80 UNITS)

    OVERALL RECORD 16-12 (-3.30 UNITS)
    A $100 player would down $330

SORRY john but maybe this will help some:

NORTH CAROLINA STATE - Running back Darrell Blackman (ankle) and defensive backs Phil Holloman (ankle) and Marcus Hudson (back) are probable for Thursday's game against Georgia Tech. Defensive lineman Raymond Brooks (academics) is expected to miss the entire season.
GEORGIA TECH - Defensive lineman Joe Anoai (ankle) is questionable for Thursday's game against North Carolina State. Defensive lineman Eric Henderson (ankle) is expected to miss Thursday's game. Running back Reuben Houston (personal) and defensive linemen Darryl Richard (knee) and Travis Parker (eligibility) are expected to miss the entire season.

GAME NOTES: The 24th-ranked Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets appear to be serious ACC contenders this season, and they will take on the North Carolina State Wolfpack in front of what promises to be a capacity crowd Thursday night. NC State is desperate for a win, as it enters this contest with a 1-2 record, including an 0-2 mark in ACC play. It should be pointed out, however, that the club lost by just four points to national powerhouse Virginia Tech in the opener, proof that head coach Chuck Amato's team is capable of hanging with top-notch competition. The Wolfpack has been idle since September 24th when it dropped a 31-24 decision to North Carolina. As for Georgia Tech, it won its first three games of the season to set up a battle of undefeated teams with Virginia Tech. That game turned out to be completely one-sided, as the Hokies rolled to a 51-7 triumph in Blacksburg. At 1-1 in league play, the Yellow Jackets need to win this weekend to remain in the ACC title race. Georgia Tech holds a 16-8 lead in the all-time series with NC State, including four straight wins over the Wolfpack.
NC State is averaging 31.3 ppg and 394.3 total ypg through the first three outings, but those impressive numbers are due in large part to the team's 54- point outburst against Eastern Kentucky in the second week of the season. Otherwise, the Wolfpack offense has been fairly average.
Georgia Tech did not play too bad defensively against Virginia Tech despite the fact that the Hokies finished with 51 points. In addition to the two defensive touchdowns scored by VaTech, the team also managed a touchdown on a blocked field goal. Yes, the Hokies did score three offensive touchdowns, but the fact that Ball and company couldn't move the ball didn't help the GaTech defense at all. The Hokies finished with 320 yards and 15 first downs, numbers that the Jackets would likely have been happy with heading into the contest. Dawan Landry and Gerris Wilkinson had eight tackles apiece in the loss. Opponents are averaging 24.9 ppg and 312.2 total ypg against the Jackets, and that scoring number was obviously much lower before the VaTech game. Teams are gaining just 2.7 ypc and 84.2 ypg on the ground against Georgia Tech, and the team has also picked off 10 balls while holding opposing quarterbacks to under 50 percent on completions.
Georgia Tech is the pick in this game, as it is undoubtedly eager to avenge to embarrassing loss to the Hokies. Ball has to be considered one of the most inconsistent quarterbacks in the nation, but he should be able to get the job done at home on Thursday.
