Here are the game notes.............
The Panthers will be seeking to pile on the misery of a Green Bay club that is
0-3 for the first time since the 1988 campaign, when the Pack opened 0-5 en
route to a 4-12 finish. Favre was a sophomore at Southern Miss when the
Packers last succumbed to such losing depths.
Favre (738 passing yards, 5 TD, 7 INT), who completed 14-of-24 passes for 195
yards, two touchdowns, and three interceptions last week against Tampa Bay,
enters Week 4 with a scant 72.7 passer rating. A major problem for Favre has
been pressure, as he has been sacked seven times on the year, including twice
last week. With Javon Walker (knee) out of the lineup with a season-ending
knee injury, Favre has connected most often with wideouts Donald Driver (12
receptions, 1 TD), Robert Ferguson (9 receptions, 2 TD), and Antonio Chatman
(7 receptions, 1 TD). Driver had a quiet day (2 catches, 49 yards) against the
Bucs due in large part to a sprained ankle, but Ferguson (4 receptions, 68
yards, 1 TD on the day) and Chatman (2 receptions, 37 yards, 1 TD) both had TD
catches. Tight end Bubba Franks (7 receptions), who missed last week with a
knee injury, is questionable for this week, David Martin (2 receptions), who
had one catch last week, will take his place if necessary.
Looking to put pressure on Favre will be end Julius Peppers (11 tackles), who
is still seeking his first sack of the 2005 season. The '04 Pro Bowler has
been the face of a pass rush that is tied for 26th in the NFL with just three
sacks. Fellow end Mike Rucker (8 tackles, 1 sack on the year) has one of the
three. The Carolina secondary allowed Miami's Gus Frerotte to throw two
touchdown passes last week, as cornerback Ken Lucas (14 tackles, 1 INT) was on
the shelf with a bum shoulder. Lucas is expected to start this week opposite
Chris Gamble (18 tackles, 1 INT), who had six tackles and his first pick of
the year against Miami. Safeties Mike Minter (9 tackles) and Marlon McCree (10
tackles) will round out the secondary.
The Green Bay running game has yet to get untracked in 2005, as it ranks 25th
in the league (79 yards per game), while averaging 3.3 yards per rush and not
finding the end zone through three games. Ahman Green (47 carries, 13
receptions, 170 yards), who rushed 19 times for 58 yards and caught three
passes in the Tampa loss, is averaging just 3.6 yards per carry. Backup Najeh
Davenport (14 carries, 41 yards), who had three carries for five yards a week
ago, has fared no better. Fullback William Henderson (10 receptions) has been
a factor only in the passing game.
A Carolina run-stopping unit that already lost defensive tackle Kris Jenkins
(knee) for the season was further hampered by the absence of linebacker Will
Witherspoon (16 tackles, 1 INT) because of a knee injury last Sunday. Minus
Witherspoon, who is questionable for this week, the Panthers allowed Miami
rookie Ronnie Brown to rush for 132 yards and a touchdown on 23 carries.
Carolina needs more production at the point of attack from tackles Brentson
Buckner (8 tackles) and Jordan Carstens (5 tackles), while linebackers Dan
Morgan (18 tackles) and Brandon Short (8 tackles) must compensate if
Witherspoon is absent. Morgan had a team-high 11 tackles against the Dolphins.
Peppers leads all Carolina linemen with 11 stops on the year.
PANTHERS OFFENSE VS. PACKERS DEFENSE
Carolina's loss to Miami was aided by a subpar game for running back Stephen
Davis (194 yards, 4 TD), who was limited to 36 yards on 16 carries and also
lost a fumble in the defeat. Backup DeShaun Foster (105 rushing yards, 7
receptions) fared little better, carrying eight times for 27 yards in the
loss. Carolina comes into Monday's game averaging a modest 102.0 yards per
game on the ground, including just 3.5 yards per carry.
Green Bay comes off a week in which it allowed Tampa Bay rookie Cadillac
Williams to move the chains to the tune of 158 yards on 37 carries. The return
of linebacker Na'il Diggs (2 tackles) to the lineup after Diggs had missed the
first two games with a knee injury did little to impact that effort, and
Sherman will need he and fellow LBs Nick Barnett (29 tackles) and Robert
Thomas (15 tackles) to step up their effort against the Panthers. Barnett
posted a game-high 15 tackles against the Bucs, Up front, end Aaron Kampman
(14 tackles) leads all Green Bay linemen in stops, recording six last week.
Tackles Cullen Jenkins (8 tackles) and Grady Jackson (6 tackles) have also
been active in the run-stopping game.
Favre isn't the only quarterback that will take the field Monday night looking
to reverse a disappointing first month. Carolina's Jake Delhomme (651 passing
yards, 4 TD, 4 INT) has just a 72.3 passer rating entering Week 4, though the
signal-caller improved to that number with a 19-of-35, 285-yard, three-
touchdown performance against the Dolphins. Delhomme did throw an interception
and lose a fumble in the game. The QB had little trouble finding wideout Steve
Smith (23 receptions, 342 yards, 4 TD), who got behind the Dolphin secondary
on a regular basis during a huge 11-catch, 170-yard, three-touchdown day.
Smith ranked among the league leaders in all receiving categories entering
Week 4. The Panthers have yet to find a reliable No. 2 wideout, as the veteran
Ricky Proehl (4 receptions, 82 yards on the year) and second-year pro Keary
Colbert (2 receptions, 11 yards) have both been quiet. Proehl had one
reception in Week 3, and Colbert did not have a catch. Tight end Kris Mangum
(6 receptions, 72 yards), who caught two balls for 32 yards versus the Fins,
has been a reliable target over the middle. Delhomme has been sacked six times
in 2005 to date, including four times last week
The Packers have been mostly awful in the secondary, allowing 206.7 yards per
game, and giving up seven passing touchdowns, tied for the second-worst mark
in the league. Complicating matters for the Pack is Monday's possible absence
of cornerback Ahmad Carroll (13 tackles, 1 INT) who played well and notched
his first interception of 2005 last week but is questionable with a bruised
knee. If Carroll can't go, former starter Joey Thomas (concussion), who missed
last week, will fill in. Veteran Al Harris (11 tackles), who had six tackles
last Sunday, will likely be responsible for holding Smith in check. Elsewhere
in the secondary, safeties Mark Roman (20 tackles) and Nick Collins (14
tackles) had six tackles each in the loss to Tampa Bay. Green Bay has just
four sacks through three weeks, including two recorded last week. Kampman (2
sacks on the year) had one of the sacks, but top 2004 sack man Kabeer Gbaja-
Biamila (13 tackles, 0.5 sacks) could not break through to Brian Griese in
Week 3.
I believe that the pack and Favre are a history play for most...no disrespect to anyone....But you can`t keep betting this team or QB off there past.
They are brutal and so is Favre...yes he is a hall
of famer...That`s all in the past...Yes the passion is still there, but the skills have vastly deteriorated.
I hate to use this term, but he is broken down.
I see the Pack getting humiliated on Monday
night football by the Panthers.
I also believe the linesmakers have this line right where
they want it...sucking the packer and favre band wagon
junkies with the hook. This line might even go too 8
just to get more and more packer money.
THE PANTHERS IN A BIG WAY -7.5.............
