    Friday, September 30th

Pittsburgh at Rutgers, 8:00 EST ESPN2
Pittsburgh - 9-2 Under off BB road games
Rutgers - 4-16 ATS off a bye week

  • #2
    Friday's game
Pitt beat Rutgers last five years, all by 12+ points, winning last two visits to this site, 42-0/42-32; Panthers are 13-9 vs spread in series, but 3-10 vs number in last 13 Big East openers. Rutgers outgained Pitt last year, 407-397 but still lost 41-17. Panthers are 1-3, beating I-AA Youngstown last week; they have a turnover ratio of minus-5 this season.

Rutgers is hard to gauge; they blew big lead in losing opener at Illinois, then beat pair of lightweights. Wannstedt has to have a pretty big coaching edge over Schiano. Big game for Pittsburgh, this woul dbe a very bad game for them to lose, recruiting-wise.

        13) Starting pitchers go seven innings these days, or 110 pitches- that is it; it is rare for pitcher to throw more than 120 pitches in a game, so you need solid setup men and a dependable closer. Without those things, unless you have a $150 million+ payroll, so you can buy lot of hitters, forget about the playoffs.

        12) The impact of base stealing on game has really gone down. Back in 70's, when they were was more artificial turf, fast outfielders were essential, teams all had fast leadoff hitters. Now? Moneyball teams just insert guys with good on-base percentages, not fast guys.

        11) Watching games from Wrigley Field is never a bad thing.

        10) Teams like Pirates, Royals, Brewers, A's need lower expectations; anytime a small market team wins more than half their games, it is a good season. Playoffs are unrealistic expectation, although it will happen now and then.

        9) If I were an escaped felon, the best place to hide would be in bleachers at any Devil Rays' home game.

        8) The $150 I spend on the Extra Innings package is some of the best money I spend all year.

        7) Bobby Cox and Leo Mazzone are doing amazing things in Atlanta, 14 consecutive division titles. Weird thing is, Marlins have no division banners, but since their inception, still have more World Series titles
        (2-1) than Atlanta does.

        6) I am constantly amazed how managers are so calm, for most part; season is 162 games in 180 days, tons of ups and downs, guess skipper needs an even keel to stay sane.

        5) Fellow who does play-by-play for the Royals must need therapy after the season ends

        4) Red Sox fans are equally annoying as Bronx fans.

        3) Teams use their whole rosters now; your 24th and 25th guy matter. A lot. Couple of games will swing on your last two guys, and in close pennant race, they better come through.

        2) Listening to Vin Scully call a game is an honor.

        1) I dislike individual awards a lot, but if David Ortiz doesn't win the AL MVP, do away with the award.
