Noticing the odds going up quickly so jump on now.

On the N. Car. St vs Virginia Tech game-

This is a good stat to know and helped me yesterday big time.

Play On - Underdogs of 3.5 to 10 points - in non-conference games, with 4+ more total starters and an experienced QB returning against team with new QB.
          (30-8 over the last 10 seasons.) (78.9%, +21.2 units. *)

However, NC State played very badly at home last year and I believe they can wipe all that away with a win today.

VIRGINIA TECH: Expected to struggle in its first year in the ACC, Virginia Tech instead rode an underdog mentality all the way to the conference title. In finishing 10-3 SU & 9-3 ATS, the Hokies quietly snuck up on their unsuspecting new rivals, winning four games by a TD or less, culminated by a conference clinching 16-10 win at Miami in the season finale. The league championship meant a first BCS bowl appearance in five years, though a 16-13 Sugar Bowl loss to Auburn ensued.
For 2005, the team faces the prospects of life without ACC POY QB Bryan Randall as well as seven other starters. There is still a lot of talent in place though for Head Coach Frank Beamer, whose teams normally rely on defense and special teams anyway. QB Marcus Vick gets a second chance to lead this program in what should be another contending season.

NC STATE: Injuries, inconsistent quarterback play, and turnovers led to a step backwards for the NC State football program in 2004, as the Wolfpack finished just 5-6 SU & 3-6-1 ATS and failed to qualify for a bowl game for the first time since the ’99 season. Defensively the team was awesome, finishing as the top ranked unit nationally in yardage. They were often put in precarious positions though because of turnovers, and allowed a non-indicative 19.8 PPG. The offense didn’t hold up its end of the bargain, even behind stud RB T.A. McClendon, it dropped by 105 YPG in production. QB Jay Davis, now a senior, has to get better if his team is to follow suit. They also have to pick up their play at home as 2004 produced just a 2-4 SU & 0-4-1 ATS record there. With the weakest schedule in the ACC, look for NC State to be more balanced and return to bowl play in 2005.

              On Louisville/ Kentucky

LOUISVILLE: It’s rare that a team steps up to a more formidable league and is immediately considered the favorite for that title. That type of potentially overzealous hype might be the only factor capable of holding Louisville back in its first year of Big East football.

The Cardinals were a legitimate BCS caliber team in 2004, more so than any school that actually represented this conference a year ago. Finishing 11-1 SU & 10-2 ATS, they poured in a national high 49.8 PPG, while outscoring the opposition by 30.1 PPG. Moreover, the only loss came at Miami.

There are some big holes to fill in 2005, with only half of the starters returning so don’t expect last year’s statistics, but a similar won-lost record is possible. If things really come together, especially behind former prep phenom QB Brian Brohm, this team could be a major player in the BCS standings.

KENTUCKY: Rich Brooks could find himself on the hot seat in Kentucky if things don’t turn around quickly as his two teams here have produced just six wins so far.

Moreover, the thing that made the Wildcats so dangerous in previous years, their high-powered offense, has gone MIA under Brooks. In fact, last year’s offense ranked in the bottom 5 nationally in points, total yards, and yards per play. That might not be as damaging at some schools, but Kentucky is not exactly known for its defense either.

That unit ranked 102nd overall. How much will it take for a team that was outscored by 18.4 PPG in SEC play to improve enough for any impact in the standings? Probably more than the Wildcats are capable of in 2005, especially with playmaking QB Shane Boyd having graduated. Look for another season long struggle in Lexington.

                      Syracuse/West Virginny

W VIRGINIA: This is probably a better year than ever to be rebuilding in the Big East, but a program that loses the talent that West Virginia has since January should be expected to take a hit.

QB Rasheed Marshall, RB Kay-Jay Harris, and CB Adam Jones were the heart and soul of this underachieving group in 2004, having failed to live up to heavy favorite expectations in the conference. Overall, the Mountaineers finished 8-4, but a Gator Bowl loss falls far short of an expected Fiesta Bowl appearance and payout.

Perhaps the lack of high expectations will actually benefit this bunch in 2005. Most of the big conference games are at home, where they’ve lost just once in their last 10 games. Plus, no other Big East team boasts the running game this team has the past couple of years. If adequate replacements can be found, look for West Virginia to again see the postseason.

SYRACUSE: The move of replacing long time Head Coach Paul Pasqualoni with Texas DC Greg Robinson couldn’t come at a better time, as the new era at Syracuse runs concurrent with a new era in the Big East.

Furthermore, the Orangemen, who tied for the league title last year, aren’t that far off. A change of perspective may be all that’s needed to get them back to the top.
The 6-6 SU & 8-4 ATS 2004 team was outscored by 4.8 PPG but most importantly, it returned to postseason play.

Plus it was able to continue reestablishing the home field advantage lost in 2002 by going 4-1 SU & 5-0 ATS at the Carrier dome. With Robinson’s presence expected to have a great influence on the defense, expect Syracuse to contend in 2005, despite the league’s most challenging schedule.
