Foxsports NCAA fearless predictions
Game of the Week
No. 9 Miami (FL) at No. 14 Florida State — Monday at 8 p.m. ET
Line:
Miami -3
The annual battle of Sunshine State superpowers takes on a little less meaning this year with the two in separate ACC divisions (they could meet in the ACC championship game), but it's still a huge game in the conference and national title races. After relatively down years, the two teams need to get off to a hot start needing a win to calm down increasingly grumbling fan bases, especially on the Seminole side after losing the last six to the Canes with the last FSU win coming in 1999. Miami has to win or else the showdown at Clemson in two weeks will be a must-win. No matter where the two teams are ranked and how they look on paper, it's still Miami vs. Florida State meaning it'll likely be one of the best games of the season. It does stink that these two are playing in the season opener; each team will be far better in a few weeks after having time to jell. Miami has fewer question marks than Florida State and has a huge edge in series momentum. Points and yards will be tough to come by against two of the nation's best defenses, so it'll come down to which team makes the fewer mistakes. It's Miami vs. Florida State. You know the Florida State kicking game will be a factor in crunch time.
Prediction: Miami 17 ... Florida State 13

In the Spotlight
No. 18 Boise State at No. 13 Georgia — Saturday at 8 p.m. ET
Line:
UGA -7
might be more exciting and meaningful games on the week one slate, but few carry the intrigue and ramifications for "mid-majors" as this one. Boise State has won an incredible 64 games over the last six seasons averaging over ten a year, but it doesn't have a truly big win on the resume. Oh sure, beating Oregon State last year was nice and there were a few Humanitarian Bowl wins over decent teams, but beating Georgia in Georgia might finally give the Broncos some true national respect. A blowout loss means the college football world might continue to look at the "mid-majors" as inferior. Dawg fans are scared of this game. They should be.

FSN College Football Saturday
Louisiana-Lafayette at No. 2 Texas — Saturday at 7 p.m. ET
Line:
UT -40
ON FSN
The Fiesta Bowl has become the land of misfit bowl teams, but it has also been the best of the BCS bunch over the last two seasons. Now it hosts one of the most historic and important bowl games ever. The BCS system was all but designed to keep the little guy out. If you're not in one of the big six conferences, you're not really playing D-I college football. But all that changed this season as teams like Boise State and Louisville knocked on the door, and Utah kicked it down. This will not be pretty. Texas will get its first teamers just over two quarters worth of work before the backups get some meaningful experience.

Temple at No. 20 Arizona State
Thursday at 10 p.m. ET
Line:
ASU -27.5
Arizona State has the potential to be a top ten team and make some major noise in the national title race, or at least be a factor with some huge games ahead highlighted by a showdown at LSU next week. Temple has to be viewed as a tune up for the Sun Devils with QB Sam Keller needing a little more work as the starter and the running game having to find some sort of consistency. Temple is just looking to get its feet wet before having to travel to Wisconsin next week. If focused, the Sun Devils will get up by 21 before Temple breaks a sweat.
Prediction: Arizona State 52 ... Temple 10
Final: Arizona State 63 ... Temple 16

Miami (OH) at No. 6 Ohio State
Saturday at Noon ET
Line:
OSU -15
This has landmine written all over it. Miami appears to be just about as good as Ben Roethlisbeger's 13-1 juggernaut of 2003 and is more than talented enough to catch the Buckeyes looking ahead to the Texas showdown next week. Ohio State wants to continue the momentum built at the end of last year when it rocked Michigan and Oklahoma State getting Buckeye fans talking about a possible spot in the 2006 Rose Bowl for the national title. Considering how "Tressel Ball" normally keeps games close, this could be far more competitive than many might expect.

TCU at No. 7 Oklahoma
Saturday at Noon ET
Line:
OU -26.5
The last time we saw Oklahoma, it was hoping not to get hurt in in the second half of the Orange Bowl debacle against USC. It tries to rebuild its image and good name with several new starters going against an improved TCU team playing its first game as a Mountain West member. The Horned Frogs are coming off a rough 5-6 season after its defense fell off the map allowing 34 points per game. With many of the key players back, and back from injury, TCU should be a tougher out than many OU fans are planning for.

Ball State at No. 11 Iowa
Saturday at Noon ET
Line:
Iowa -38.5
If you're looking forward to watching Iowa win in impressive fashion, this is the game for you. There are few sure things in the college football world, but Iowa vs. MAC teams has become one of them in recent year going 7-0 by a total score of 297 to 81. Ball State is coming off a rough 2-9 season and should struggle for a little while until it finds some playmakers on offense. Thanks to injuries, Iowa's rushing game finished 116th in the nation last year. But hey, it's Iowa vs. a MAC team. You know what's going to happen.

UAB at No. 3 Tennessee
Saturday at 12:30 p.m. ET
Line:
Vols -23.5
Arguably, this is a battle of Conference USA's best team vs. the SEC's best team. UAB, led by quarterback Darrell Hackney, has been predicted by many to win the league title, and it can do wonders for the conference's reputation with a good showing in Knoxville. Tennessee is a legitimate national title contender that needs to get this game over with as quickly and easily as possible to get ready for the Florida showdown the following week. The UAB defense will have moments, but the Tennessee defense front seven that will control the game.

No. 22 Boston College at BYU
Saturday at 3:30 p.m. ET
Line:
BC -4
After three straight losing seasons, BYU underwent an offseason coaching change moving Bronco Mendenhall from defensive coordinator to head coach in an effort to turn the program back around and make it a national power again. He has a nasty debut facing a Boston College team that's getting some respect from the national polls and press, but probably not enough considering the experience and talent returning. In its first game as an ACC team, BC will have to deal with a pumped up Provo crowd in one of the weekend's more competitive games.

Northern Illinois at No. 4 Michigan
Saturday at 3:30 p.m. ET
Line:
Mich -18
This is hardly your run of the mill Big Ten vs. MAC matchup with what some believe to be the best Northern Illinois team head coach Joe Novak has put together getting its shot in the Big House on the big stage. The Huskies gave Maryland and Iowa State good runs in losses last year and beat the Terps, along with Alabama in 2003; there isn't going to be any fear. Michigan has designs on winning the national title, but it wouldn't be a shock if the dreams were derailed right off the bat. If nothing else, this is going to be a fantastic early test for the Wolverines.

Sacramento State at No. 19 Cal
Saturday at 11 p.m. ET
Line:
No Line
Cal needs to replace several top players on both sides of the ball, and it'll get a chance to see what all of its players can do in a glorified scrimmage. Sacramento State hasn't had any luck over the past few years in opening games against D-I teams losing to Nevada 59-7 last year, 40-7 to Oregon State in 2003, and 42-12 to UTEP in 2002. If you're hoping to watch Cal put up astronomical numbers, this is the game for you. So who gets the honor or filling the huge shoes of QB Aaron Rodgers? At least to start the season, it'll be 6-5, 230-pound redshirt freshman Nathan Longshore.

Wyoming at No. 10 Florida
Saturday at 6 p.m. ET
Line:
FLA -22
It would be hard to find two programs more excited to get the season started. Wyoming, after years of being one of college football's bottom feeders, came up with a tremendous 2004 capped off by a Las Vegas Bowl win over UCLA. With 19 starters back, the Cowboys are thinking this will be a huge season hoping the program takes another big step. Florida fans are bursting with excitement over the beginning of the Urban Meyer era hoping his hiring means a return to the national title hunt. Wyoming can measure how good it is against one of the nation's top teams, while Florida can get a nice win under its belt preparing for Tennessee two weeks later. There's no way Meyer is going to lose his home opener.

Western Michigan at No. 25 Virginia
Saturday at 6 p.m. ET
Line:
UVA -32.5
Western Michigan is coming off a horrible season going 0-10 against D-I teams necessitating a coaching change to Bill Cubit for a rebuilding job. He'll have his hands full with Virginia, who's looking at this game as a tune up trying to get the passing game going. The Broncos don't have much of a chance to make this interesting, so look at this as a chance for each team to get some kinks worked out. Virginia has to get its passing game going after finishing 91st in the nation. If there's no balance, the offense will struggle against the top teams like it did last year. QB Marques Hagans is a decent passer, but he needs weapons to emerge and has to find a reliable go-to guy.
Prediction: Virginia 59 ... Western Michigan 10

No. 1 USC at Hawaii
Saturday at 7 p.m. ET
Line:
USC -33
After all of the magazine ****** and all of the hype and all of the overexposure, USC finally gets a chance to get on the field and play some football making the trip over the pond to one of college football's most dangerous environments. Hawaii needs a lot of work after finishing last year strong, but this is still going to be a dangerous passing attack and should help provide plenty of fireworks even if it's getting obliterated. USC will look every bit like the defending national champions. Matt Leinart will be sharp, but it'll be the ground game that takes center stage. Look for the Trojans to end the drama in about ten minutes.
Prediction: USC 52 ... Hawaii 19

No. 17 Texas A&M at Clemson
Saturday at 8 p.m. ET
Line:
A&M -1
The rematch of last year's 27-6 A&M win is a big battle for conference bragging rights as well as national respect. Both programs are looking for a big year, and the winner will get a major confidence boost and a major feather in its cap. This is a must-win for Clemson with at Maryland, Miami, Boston College, and road trips to Wake Forest and NC State to follow. The Tigers can't afford to lose games at home. Texas A&M has it easy with SMU, Texas State and Baylor over the next month, so a win in Death Valley will mean a 4-0 start. Call this a home game pick with Clemson being much stronger this year at home.

Notre Dame at No. 23 Pittsburgh
Saturday at 8 p.m. ET
Line:
Pitt -3.5
This is one of those rare moments when the two head coaches are actually bigger than the game itself. In front of a primetime, national TV audience, Charlie Weis and Dave Wannstedt will usher in new eras at Notre Dame and Pitt, respectively, while taking the first step in what they hope will be returns to glory for their alma maters. Neither has held a head job in college, but they did stand on opposing sidelines many times in the NFL's AFC East. As he showed in South Bend last November, Palko is the kind of quarterback that can will a team to victory in big games.

Georgia Tech at No. 16 Auburn
Saturday at 8:45 p.m. ET
Line:
Aub -7
Auburn and its fans have been desperate to get back on the field after not getting a shot to play for the national title despite an undefeated 2004 season. It'll have a battle on national TV against Georgia Tech and it's sure-to-be top 15 defense. The Yellow Jackets have enough talent on both sides of the ball to come out of Jordan-Hare Stadium with the upset as long as they're consistent on offense, while production will be a question for Auburn's offense thanks to its new backfield. The winner will have a fantastic week one win to build on and will make a big jump up in the rankings.

No. 12 Louisville at Kentucky
Sunday at 3:30 p.m. ET
Line:
L'Ville -22
Louisville has made this a one-sided rivalry, winning five of the last six in the series, and all but one by more than two touchdowns. On the college football pecking order, the Cards have soared past the ‘Cats like Secretariat at Belmont. Coming off an 11-1 season and ranked No. 12 in the preseason AP poll, the excitement surrounding the Louisville program has never been more palpable. On the complete opposite spectrum is Kentucky, which has won six games in two years, is severely deficient in talent and is being led by Rich Brooks, a lame duck coach, who'll need a miracle to be back in Lexington in 2006. This is a mismatch in every possible facet.

No. 8 Virginia Tech at N.C. State
Sunday at 7:15 p.m. ET
Line:
VT -5.5
Virginia Tech lost to three teams last year. USC and Auburn didn't lose a game finishing 1-2 in the rankings, while the third loss was 17-16 to NC State in the fourth week of the season on a missed field goal late in a tremendous defensive battle. While Tech rallied to win the ACC title, NC State went in the tank losing four of five after struggling to beat Wake Forest in overtime. Last year's major disappointment for the Wolfpack can quickly be forgotten with a big win over the defensive champs, while the Hokies can show that they mean to be a player in the national title race by coming away from NC State with a good win over one of the nation's better defenses.

Why do I even bother? I work my ass off to produce this thread and picks. Aside from Chuck and Tomf, not one "thanks BB" or "good job BB"? Over 1,500 views and a 4-0 sweep you guys cant take the time to drop in. Simply amazing and very uncool. Same shit as last year, got maybe 5 thanks during the whole season. Do you guys have any idea how long it takes to do this stuff? I'm talking hours, and I can't justify doing it for a bunch of ingrates. And it doesn't stop there, I can't tell you how many good lucks I give out and don't get reciprocated in my personal threads, so what if my record sucks, take 5 seconds to shoot me a good luck(with the exception of moondog, kmann, spark, kb, keawe, lsu, chuck, bw, red, bh$ and a few others, forgive me if I forgot a few, but I'm pissed) If for some reason you don't like me than fine or i pissed you off, tell me so, I can take it, but don't leave me hanging day in and day out after I wish you a good luck.Last edited by Blackbeard; 09-04-2005, 11:09 AM.
