3 Units on Philadelphia Eagles +7 -105
Last week the San Franc! isco 49ers allowed 441 yards to San Diego. Yesterday the same Chargers had 144 yards of offense at Miami. Three weeks ago they had 256 yards against St. Louis. Three weeks ago 243 yards against the Jets. Four weeks ago 333 yards against Oakland. The point being that this San Francisco defense is vulnerable. Offensively, despite having sensational receivers in Owens, Stokes, and Streets, the 49ers quite often refuse to throw downfield. We don’t see this occurring tonight against a very talented Philadelphia secondary (#5 against the pass). Philadelphia leads the league in rushing at 5.1 a carry and faces a San Francisco defense that is yielding 4.5 a rush. The Eagles have had all week to prepare Koy Detmer with Donovan McNabb out six to eight weeks. We think Coach Reid will keep the gameplan simple and rely on running the football. Two weeks ago we watched San Francisco nurse a small lead against Kansas City. Nobody is better at time management with the lead than ! the 49ers. By the same token, they rarely seem to blow anybody out and are very cautious and conservative with the advantage. Philly is also an attractive underdog knowing that placekicker David Akers has been good on 22-of-23 field goal attempts while 49ers kicker Jose Cortez has been less than reliable. The Eagles are 23-10 ATS on the road and they’ve covered 21 of 31 as an underdog. The 49ers have allowed 20 or more points in five of their last six games. Philly is also 6-0 against other teams from the NFC outscoring them on average by a count of 29-10. The Eagles are #3 in total defense and we will count on them tonight to keep us competitive against a San Francisco attack that has sputtered at times in recent weeks and with a stop unit that has been suspicious at best recently. Grab the points with Philly. "The Animal" personally passed on the total tonight, but once again Wildcat Sports has their 10* Monday night total of the Year on 'OVER' 37 1/2 in tonight's ! game. Wildcat 6-0 in football 10* plays the past three weekends including the Oakland Raiders and Bowling Green the past two days.
Pro Basketball:
3 Units on New Orleans Hornets +4 -110
5th game in seven days for Philadelphia and that includes three contests on enemy hardwoods or travel situations. Last week we used the 76ers as a 3-point dog at New Orleans and they covered losing by a point on a David Wesley offense stick-back at the buzzer. Of course, they also trailed 38-14 at the start of the game before staging a miraculous comeback. Some might point to this being a revenge spot for Philly and their impressive 7-0 record at home. But we prefer to take the generous points in two very even teams. Hornets are holding foes to just 88 points a contest on the road. Philadelphia is just 4-15 ATS off a road win by 10 points or more the last three years. They 76ers are also 6-17 ATS after playing three consecutive games as a listed favorite. Since 1996, the Hornets are 34-18 ATS on the road after three or more straight victories. We take! the points with New Orleans.
College Basketball:
3 Units on Alabama -23 -110
Alabama was 18-0 at home last year and stomped on Alabama State by 26 in the season opener this year. The Tide are very athletic and have exceptional size and quickness. They should be among the leaders in a very tough conference with the exception of Ole Miss and Mississippi State, who are both having personnel problems at the moment. Bama won their home games by 20 points a contest last year and Middle Tennessee State is a team that only averaged 67 points a game a season ago and now must replace their leading scorer in center Lee Nosse (12.6 a contest). The Blue Raiders come off a disturbing home loss to East Carolina and venture out on the highway to a destination they have no business entering. If Alabama wants to, they could win by 35 points and you know players #6 to #12 on the Bama bench are superior athletes to anything Midd! le Tennessee State can bring to the table. Lay it.
4 Units on Utah +4½ -110
Gonzaga was far from impressive Friday night in their narrow escape to Hofstra winning by eight at home as a 25-point chalk. It could be quite an adjustment for the Zags without Dan Dickau or Casey Calvary filling the net. Utah won 21 games last year and we always like Majerus as an underdog on a neutral court. Plus the Utes return conference Player of the Year Britton Johnsen and sharp-shooting guard Nick Jacobson. Utah always has sensational size and solid guard play. They allowed just 47 points in their season-opener and they should be able to name tempo tonight without the presence of Dickau anymore. We take the points in Maui tonight.
