  • NFL Preseason Picks for Week 2

    4-4-0 (+0.62 units)

    8/18

    Patriots -2.5 (-131) vs. Saints 1*

I have seen a lot of people on the Saints so far but I have to go with the defending champions in this one. Bill Belichick is 15-7 SU and 14-7-1 ATS (including 7-3 ATS at home) as the coach of the Patriots. Rookie reserve QB Matt Cassel went 13-20 for 135 yards, and led 4 scoring drives in the win over the Bengals last weekend. He could have a big game against the Saints secondary.

    8/19

    Titans +3.5 (-114) @ Falcons 1*

I lost last weekend going with the Titans at home as they fell to Tampa Bay in overtime. However, I will be going with them again on Friday because of their recent preseason success away from home. Since 2000, the Titans are 8-1-1 ATS on the road and 7-0 ATS as an underdog. In this game they fall into both of those categories.

    8/20

    Panthers +1 (-112) @ Giants 2**

Last weekend I made my 2 ** play the Panthers, and predicted that they would roll over my beloved Redskins. They did not disappoint as they cruised in a 28-10 victory over the Burgundy and Gold. Carolina has won 10 straight preseason games SU, they are 9-0 ATS in preseason action since 2003, and they are 5-0 ATS as an underdog in that same period of time.

Carolina Head Coach John Fox was the defensive coordinator of the Giants before becoming the Panthers head boss. He certainly relishes any opportunity to beat Big Blue, and is 2-0 in preseason action against the Giants, including a 20-10 win at the Meadowlands in 2003. Backup QBs Chris Weinke and rookie Stefan Lefors both looked good last weekend against Washington, and I see no reason to think Carolina won't win their 11th straight preseason game in this one.

    8/21

    Chargers -5.5 (+102) vs. Rams

The Chargers simply could not score last week in their preseason opener, a 10-7 loss to the Packers at Lambeau Field. Backup QBs Philip Rivers and Cleo Lemon both showed flashes of ability, but the team always seemed to let down near the end zone. Kicker Nate Kaeding did not help cause, missing 3 FG tries in the 4th quarter, any one of which would have given San Diego the lead.

I expect a lot more points to be put on the board by San Diego in this one, in front of the home crowd, and against a Rams defense that just lost cornerback Jeremetrius Butler for the season. Mike Martz has never been a coach who cared much about the preseason, especially away from home. The Rams are 0-6 SU and 1-5 ATS on the road in the preseason since 2002.

I will post more plays as the weekend goes on if I see anything else i like.

    Good luck!

Damn, I thought we had that one tonight.

Here's a trend for you guys: My preseason picks are 4-0 ATS on Saturdays, and 0-5 ATS on every other day of the week. Load up on the Panthers!

Congrats to the Saints bettors. When the announcers said that Haslett wanted this one they weren't kidding. Nice call.

Tough loss with the Panthers over the weekend. I guess their preseason win streak had to end some time.

I finish the weekend 2-2 (-1.53 units) and am now 6-6 (0.91 units) overall.....I'm ready for the regular season.
