        13) Leave it to the Patriots to unearth a QB who did not even play in college. Matt Cassel, a third-stringer at USC, was 13-23 Friday night, as New England got a 23-13 win at Cincinnati. Amazing.

        12) Family ties: QB Joey, golfer Padraig and poker ace Dan Harrington are all cousins; Joey has a brother Mike, who is entering his senior year as QB for the Idaho Vandals, and is supposed to be pretty good.

        11) Mike Lowell pulled hidden ball trick on Arizona Wednesday, with tying run on third and one out, with Marlins leading by run in seventh inning. Florida went on for a 10-5 win, but Lowell made a huge play.

        10) U of Houston head coach Art Briles once had a four-year run as a high school coach at Stephanine HS in Texas, where he was 90-2-1 for six years, with four state championships. Cougars are slowly getting better although they won't be 90-2-1 anytime soon.

        9) Middle Tennessee and North Texas play biggest game of Sun Belt Conference season September 10, so is it possible that when these two clubs face LSU and Alabama the previous week, they will be looking past these SEC heavyweights? Just asking..........

        8) Navy football is 18-7 the last two seasons; how is it that no bigtime schools come calling for Paul Johnson, who also won very big at Georgia Southern?

        7) Terrell Owens has made himself unwanted in NFL circles. He can't go back to the Eagles, because he is a master at burning bridges, and his salary demands preclude anybody else from having interest.

        6) If he wants to put the blame for all this where it truly belongs, he should look in the mirror, then make a call to his agent. my guess is Eagles pay him to go away, then cut him after the season.

        5) One word about Nick Saban: LSU plays Vandy, Appalachian State and North Texas this year; Miami Dolphins play Patriots, Jets and Bills twice each, and he also has ten other games. Right around Halloween, Saban might be pining for the good ol' SEC.

        4) If I coached an NFL team, I would never kick FG when it was fourth and less than 3; I would use those plays as a chance to find out about my players. Can we make a first down? There is nothing in preseason game that resembles pressure of a regular season kick for a kicker, but there is for tackle or receiver.

        3) Bronx has a $200 million payroll, and 60% of their rotation is Small-Chacon-Leiter. Wow.

        2) Don Harnum, basketball coach at Rider, will not coach the Broncs this year, as he takes a year off to be the interim AD at Rider. He will resume basketball duties for 2006-07 season. The school president must really think a lot of Harnum to offer him this post.

        1) If I could change two things about baseball (really, I'd like to change about 42), I'd outlaw coaches going to mound during inning, and I'd get rid of advantage that occurs when lefties are allowed to balk on throws to first base, holding runners on. Base stealing is fun, it should be encouraged.
