BOSTON -- Gold Glove center fielder Torii Hunter was taken off the field on a stretcher after hurting his lower left leg Friday night, an injury that could be a huge blow to Minnesota's playoff chances.
With two outs and none on in the first inning, Boston's David Ortiz hit a ball to the fence in straightaway center at Fenway Park. Hunter tried to climb the wall and make the catch, but he planted his left foot awkwardly and fell to the ground in obvious pain.
Hunter grabbed the area around his Achilles' tendon before the medical staff carted him off the field. Lew Ford replaced Hunter in the Twins' lineup.
Minnesota entered the day a game behind Oakland for the AL wild-card lead. An All-Star in 2002, Hunter has won four straight Gold Glove awards. He was hitting .269 with 14 homers and 56 RBI.
Just an update...x-rays were negative...so that's good news for Twins fans.
