Thursday List of 13, thoughts and observations
      13) Two college hoop programs to watch in the next couple seasons: Lamar, with Billy Tubbs at the reins, is on the rise down in Texas- with three solid newcomers supplementing an experienced group of returnees, the Cardinals figure to challenge Northwestern State for the right to be in Field of 65.

New Hampshire made a great hire with Bill Herrion, and with terrific summer programs in the Granite State, if he can keep some talent home, the Wildcats should own America East within three years.

      12) Ohio Ice won a game today with five players, no subs at all. Makes the coach's job simpler.

      11) A book recommendation, if you have any interest in blackjack: Bringing Down the House, about some MIT students who won $3 million from casinos over a period of time, counting cards. True story, very easy reading.

      10) There is rule here that teams need numbers on the front of their uniforms, so one team had numbers like the ones on apartment doors on front of their jerseys. Had to make playing a little awkward.

      9) Wish more kids would use backboard, especially on shorter shots. It really does help.

      8) Rubber bands are big business. Lot of people wear them, to commemorate just about anything. Friend of mine's son goes to Babson College, and he took a business course, where each group started their own actual business, using $10,000 of seed money.

Mike's group made, marketed black rubber bands, made $40,000+, finishing second in the class. As Don King would say, only in America.............

      7) Tamarac High School, which last won a basketball title the year Richard Nixon was first elected President (1968) has hired Eric Medved as its new hoop coach. The Bengals have nine seniors and hope to challenge Stillwater for the league title this coming winter.

      6) Tampa Bay Bucs start training camp this weekend, behind the Milk House, where I've been hanging out this week, watching summer basketball. Hess Fields, as they are called, host the Bucs, so the company that used to own the Jets now sponsors the Bucs' fields.

      5) There are two teams from Utah, one from Nevada, one from California here in Kissimmee. Long way to come to play four or five games of hoop.

      4) Adidas has made serious inroads in summer hoops; they sponsor lot of teams now, when they really didn't have much of a presence the last couple summers, at least not down here in Florida.

      3) There is just an assembly line of games here; I feel badly for lesser-known kids here, who play game on a court right after a big-name game with lot of buzz- the place empties out like there's a fire drill, which has to hurt the next two teams' chances of playing well.

      2) The most underrated skill in basketball is grabbing loose balls. Takes quickness, toughness, instinct.

      1) Do math: 184 teams down here, just for national tournament, at $600 a pop: that is $110,400. Add in $200 for every book of kids' info sold (conservative estimate, 300 sold), so there's another $60,000, and $87 for every second pass sold to a college, so we'll say 100 of those. That is $178,700, before you sell a t-shirt, a soda, a hot dog, one of the $5 programs, or count the admission fees ($40+ for the week).
