After a 3-0 Monday, what looked like a promising 3-1 Tuesday, quickly turned into a 1-3 day with two extra innings losses. Back to the drawing board. These are my plays for Wednesday..........
3 STAR: Montreal (Vazquez)(+$130) OVER CHICAGO (PRIOR)
The Expos and Cubs have played each other evenly over the last three seasons with each team winning six games. The Cubs won yesterday, so today is the Expos turn! Seriously, this is a good spot for the Expos. Javier Vazquez has performed very well against the Cubs in the past, the Expos are 6-2 against Chicago in games started by Vazquez. Vazquez is also 12-5 as a road underdog of +$100 to +$150 over the last three seasons. The Cubbies are also 8-16 in home games against National league teams that are allowing 3.7 runs per game or less over the last three seasons.
3 STAR: Atlanta (Maddux)(+$105) OVER PHILADELPHIA (PADILLA)
I will take Greg Maddux as an underdog almost any day. The two rough starts that Maddux has had to start the season creates some nice line value in this game. The Braves are 35-25 as a road underdog of +$100 to +$150 since 1997. Maddux has also had a lot of success against the Phillies, he is 8-4 with an ERA of 2.43 against Philadelphia since 1997.
2 STAR: DETROIT (BONDERMAN)(+$125) OVER Kansas City (Affeldet)
The Royals are undefeated at 5-0, but now they take to the road as favorite against the winless Tigers. This is a good spot for Detroit to get a win. The Tigers are 13-6 against the Royals at home the last three seasons. Kansas City is not comfortable as a road favorite, posting a 4-12 record as a road favorite of -$110 or greater over the last three seasons. KC Pitcher Jermey Affeldet is also 0-6 when pitching in night games. Road teams that are allowing 3.7 runs or less on the season after winning a game with a combined score of 4 or less are 3-21 since 1997.
2 STAR: COLORADO (CRUZ)(+$105) OVER St. Louis (Stephenson)
I'm going to continue to ride the Rockies here again who put up 12 runs last night and still lost. Garrett Stephenson has not had much success against the Rockies in his career and I don't expect him to have any today. Stephenson, in five starts against Colorado, is 0-2 with an ERA of 8.65 and his team is 1-4 in those five starts. Nelson Cruz is a good young pitcher, and he pitched well against his former team the Astros in his first start of the year and I look for him to do a good job again in this start.
* ALL LISTED PITCHERS MUST START OR THE PLAY IS NO ACTION
Good luck,
John
