The facts/stats in this list come from terrific new book, Scientific Football, written by a guy who calls himself The Football Scientist. It is exhaustive in its detail, a bit expensive ($49.95) but worth it, for the wealth of knowledge it presents. Here are few tidbits I grabbed in my first scanning of this textbook of football film study. (It is not a stat book, but observations, records tabulated after extensive film study of 2004 games.

      13) Michael Vick was rated 31st as passer in terms of bad decision making. The author claims that Vick is much better player when Atlanta has the lead, or when its opponents play man defense. Zone defense makes him get off his first read, which the author claims is a Vick weakness.

      12) Chicago QB's completed just 49.1% of their passes last year, but the addition of WR Muhammad should at least help a little. Grossman better stay healthy, though; the Bear backup QB's might not make the CFL All-Star team. Bear QB's were sacked 66 times last year, most in the league.

      11) Randy Moss was tightly covered on 13.1% of the passes thrown to him last year, 4.8% more than any other receiver (I told you, this book is amazing in its detail- he has these stats for 90 receivers). Culpepper would just toss ball up in jump ball situation, confident that Moss would beat his man/men. Vikings will need more precise offense this year, with Moss in silver and black.

      10) Seattle QB Hasselbeck had 54 passes dropped, twelve more than any other QB. WR Jackson led the NFL with 16 drops, out of the league-high 174 passes thrown his way.

      9) You'll be surprised to learn Carolina's Delhomme threw the most long passes last year (121), twelve more than any other signal caller.

      8) Who threw second-most long passes? Green? Manning? Bulger? None other than Brady, who tossed long ball 109 times. Patriots are never afraid to do what situation calls for, and often in NFL, situation begs for a long pass.

      7) QB Palmer of the explosive Bengals led NFL with 15.6 yards per attempt on long passes. Boller of Ravens averaged just 6.4 yards per long toss.

      6) Good news and bad news for Arizona; first, the bad. Kurt Warner was accurate on just 32.2% of his passes last year, the only qualifying figure worse than the Bear QB's. He didn't have the best protection in Jersey, but will he be getting that much more in the desert?

      5) Good news is that the Redbird defense was best in NFL against long pass, second in NFL in completion percentage, and fifth in yards/attempt. Cards tied with Patriots for most holding penalties drawn by their pass rush, with 20.

      4) Denver's pass protectors were called for holding, also 20 times, most in the league.

      3) Dependable receivers? Deion Branch caught 69.9% of passes thrown his way, Hines Ward caught 66.2% of his, most of which were thrown by a rookie.

      2) Donovan McNabb's passing accuracy was poor last year; he ranked 31st in league with 62 bad passes.

      1) This is just a sampling of the many observations in this excellent book. The author quit a $50,000 a year job to devote himself to this project, and the passion he has for football is obvious, which makes it a very good read.
