Reason: At 8:05pm our selection is on the San Diego Padres over the Houston Astros. Why would a manager put a guy on the mound to start a major league game when he knows that pitcher has a strained elbow ligament? Just last Saturday, Houston starter Brandon Backe was quoted as saying, "My elbow's not feeling too good. I don't know the seriousness of it because I've never felt this before in my arm." Then on Monday, Astros Manager Phil Garner was reported as saying, "I'm not concerned about his elbow. He seemed to feel better (Saturday). But my concern is to get him back on track to where he's throwing strikes." Not concerned about his elbow? What is this guy smoking? On the other side, the Padres start veteran journeyman Dennys Reyes (the Padres are his sixth ML team in nine seasons). You look up the term "spot starter" in the dictionary, and you see Reyes' picture. Reyes has appeared in 340 games in his major league career, and this will be only his 40th start (and his first of this season). For that reason (the ability to fill in as a starter when somebody goes down), he is a pretty valuable commodity in the league.
