We will be playing the Phoenix Suns +9 to the Los Angeles Lakers today. Our formulas indicate this is entirely too many points when all aspects are considered. Let us briefly review.
Phoenix if off a very solid straight up and ATS win over Minnesota yesterday and is now on a 4-1 straight up and ATS run their last 5 games overall. The Suns now occupy the 8th and final spot of the Western Conference Playoff Standings and no doubt will need to keep winning to hold that position. We mention this only because motivation is a huge aspect of late season NBA handicapping.
The Suns are a very soft 13-24 straight up and 18-18-1 ATS on the road this season. On the surface, those numbers do not inspire much confidence, but it is important to note that the Suns fair much better on the road vs. upper echelon opponents than they do vs. lesser foes. In fact, Phoenix is now a solid 13-6 ATS on the road vs. teams with a winning record and are an astonishing 14-3 ATS priced at +5 to +9.5 this season.
The Lakers come into this game on a 6-1 straight up and 5-2 ATS run their last 7 games overall. It is worth mentioning though that Los Angeles is in a huge let down spot as they are off back to back emotion packed road wins. In fact, they won a huge game at Dallas three nights ago and followed that up with a last second win over the Grizzles two nights ago.
The straight up winner is a perfect 9-0 ATS the past 9 meetings in this series and LA is 2-1 straight up and ATS vs. the Suns this season. Those series trends certainly point to the Lakers here, but team trends and motivation point to Phoenix. In our opinion, recent team trends should always come before series trends and as such, you can go ahead and put us down on the Suns.
