One week of baseball in the books, this is where I stand: 19-15 (+2.78 UNITS). These are my plays for Sunday...........
3 STAR: Chicago (Wood)(-$140) OVER CINCINNATI (WILSON)
Very favorable match up for the Cubs today with Wood on the mound. Kerry Wood in his career is 7-2 against the Reds with an ERA of 2.66. The Reds are also 5-20 as a home underdog of +125 or more the last three seasons. The Reds pitching staff is struggling and it might not get much better today with Paul Wilson making his first start of the season after recovering from a preseason injury. Go Cubs!
3 STAR: ST. LOUIS (Simontacchi)(+$115) OVER Houston (Oswalt)
The Astros have won the first two games of this three game series at St. Louis and we know how hard it is for a team to sweep a road series, especially against a division rival. The Astros send ace Roy Oswalt to the mound, but he has not had great success against St. Louis. Houston is 1-4 against St. Louis in games started by Oswalt, and he has an ERA of 4.26 in those starts. Oswalt is also only 2-6 in day road games. Jason Simontacchi has two career starts against Houston and pitched very well in those games, both wins by the Cardinals. Red Birds should avoid the sweep here.
2 STAR: Pittsburgh (Benson)(+$105) OVER PHILADELPHIA (MYERS)
I like the Pirates to rebound from their first loss at the hands of the Phillies yesterday with their ace Kris Benson on the mound today. Benson pitched very well in the season opener and has pitched very well against the Phillies in his career. Since 1997, the Pirates are 4-0 against the Phillies in games started by Benson and in those starts he has an ERA of 2.32. I like the Bucs here.
2 STAR: Baltimore (Lopez)(+$125) OVER Boston (WAKEFIELD)
A good spot for the home underdog here. Rodrigo Lopez is 4-0 in four career starts against the Red Sox with an ERA of 2.88. The Knuckleballer, Tim Wakefield is 2-4 with an ERA of 4.37 against Baltimore since 1997. This game also falls into a very profitable system play. Take the O's in this one!
