      13) The Bernie Williams era in the Bronx is over; he is now a liability in centerfield, can't throw, and has been lackadaisical on some plays this past week. Their need right now, with Matsui hurt, is a CF who can throw.

      12) In 1998, Tulane went 12-0 with Tommy Bowden, with the unspectacular Shaun King at QB; think about that last sentence. Since then, six years ago, the Green Wave is 29-40, King is career NFL backup, Bowden is on hot seat at Clemson. Sometimes, great teams are made up of just the right combination of people at the right time, and when they separate, they're never the same. The whole was greater than the individual parts.

      11) Speaking of which, just watched NFL Films piece on Jon Gruden (with Shaun King as backup QB); you get feeling it might be a one-shot deal for Gruden, who won with Tony Dungy's players, but now is struggling, even though he has more control of the franchise.

      10) I am guessing NFL Films' boss Steve Sabol has a favorite in Lions' coach Steve Mariucci, a terrific guy who seems like someone you would love to have your son play for, if he played football. He is on a lot of NFL Films features.

      9) Mariucci even hosts a celebrity bocce tournament every year; NFL Films has classic film of Mariucci and Terrell Owens playing bocce on same side, with both Bill Walsh and Gruden also there.

      8) This will probably sound weird, but to me, the finest form of entertainment on television is listening to NFL coaches when they are miked. Can learn a lot of stuff just by sitting back and listening.

      7) Tampa Bay's DH's have one HR this season, least in AL. Bronx is second-worst, with just five homers.

      6) Devil Rays have a great athlete down on farm in BJ Upton, who is hitting close to .290, but he also has 28 errors, so it might be a challenge to find him a position.

      5) If I were designing a shifting defense against a lefty hitter, I would leave the SS position open, but keep a third baseman near his position, to prevent hitters from bunting down the line for an easy hit.

      4) By the way, NBA Draft on TV Tuesday, featuring Europeans wearing bad suits, bad baseball caps (but this year's are better, at least) and a lot of young guys with a ton of upside. This is the last draft with the high school kids, thank the Lord, but the draft is a summer night filled with solid television comedy.

      3) The last 20-game winner in the minor leagues was a John Fritz, who won 20 for Quad Cities in 1992.

      2) How much does Gene Hackman make for doing voiceovers for those Home Depot commercials?

      1) Lord, I am tired of the Red Sox. You'd think they were the first team to ever win the World Series. How many Red Sox fans are writers? Go into a bookstore, there are 20 books about last fall. Like Paul Brown was heard to say, "Act like you've been there before"
