NBA Finals Game Seven: A Look Back at Recent Playoff Deciding Games

      --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

With the basketball world primed for a Game Seven between San Antonio and Detroit in the NBA Finals, we thought it would be an opportune time to go back through the ******* database and analyze past decisive playoff series contests and how they might relate to the big game on Thursday. The one-game title contest, scheduled for 9:00 PM ET, will be the first game seven in the finals since 1994 when Houston edged the Knicks.

Of course, none of it would have been possible without a gritty road effort by the Pistons in San Antonio in Tuesday night’s sixth game. Detroit held the Spurs scoresless over the final 2:18 to break open a one-point game and eventually win 95-86. In the process, it became the first road team since the Finals went to a 2-3-2 format to force a Game 7 after being down, 3-2, in the series.

The odds of the defending champions making it two straight titles however are still long, as they’ll need to win back to back games in a city where, prior to Tuesday, had not been victorious since ’97. They also face the prospects of being a 5-point underdog, and since ’97, only one team has won facing a spread equal or more to that in a decisive playoff game. That team was the New York Knicks, who upended Miami in a first round game five in ’99. However, what the Pistons lack from a historical perspective, they might make up for in experience, as they have played six deciding playoff games in the last nine seasons as opposed to just one for the Spurs. The Pistons are 4-2 SU & ATS in those games while San Antonio is 1-0 SU & ATS by virtue of its 101-78 defeat of Seattle in the opening round of 2002.

Here are the top trends favoring each team in winning the 2005 NBA title on Thursday night:

DETROIT is 9-0 against the money line (+10.3 Units) when attempting to close out a playoff series over the last 3 seasons. The average score was DETROIT 90.6, OPPONENT 79.9

SAN ANTONIO is 11-0 against the money line (+11.0 Units) in home games off a upset loss as a favorite this season.

The average score was SAN ANTONIO 100.7, OPPONENT 82.3

Overall in decisive games, home teams have won 28 of 36 deciding playoff games straight up over the last nine seasons. During that span, the ATS results are split 17-17 with two pushes. However, if you take away three upsets of Miami by New York, the numbers are far more dominant for the hosts: 28-5 SU, 17-14 ATS. In terms of totals, there have been 22 of those 36 games that have gone UNDER. Not surprising, taking into account the increased defensive effort and the pressure a deciding game presents. In fact, the last seven games have all been UNDERS.

Here is a list of the 36 deciding playoff games over the past nine reasons, with their spreads and totals included. Home teams are in CAPS:

Pistons @ Spurs (3-3)-- 101st game for Detroit, 99 for San Antonio club, and this one is for all the marbles, as Detroit made 8-17 treys in Game 6 to hold off late Spur charge to even series. Win at Alamo was first in decade for Pistons, who held Spurs to 41% from floor. 43% is magic number for San Antonio in this series; they won all games where they shot more than 43.3% from floor.

Two best players on floor are Duncan and Ginobili, but #21 needs to make free throws down stretch. Spurs are having trouble when Pistons throw pressure on them, as a result, Popovich has shortened his bench. With a title on line here, would expect a tight beginning to the game.
