THE HOT HAND: Tennessee freshman James Adkins will get the nod on Friday, June 17 against the Florida Gators, despite Vols' ace Luke Hochevar leading the nation with a 15-2 record, while posting a 2.09 ERA.

"He's pitched really well down the stretch," said Delmonico. "He's really pitched better than Hochevar down the stretch. He's hot right now and we're going to go with him."

Adkins is 3-0 in postseason play, including the Southeastern Conference Tournament, and has fanned 38 batters in the three outings. He capped it off with an 11-strikeout victory against Georgia Tech in the Atlanta Super Regional. On the year, Adkins is 7-4 with a 3.49 ERA.

"Adkins is an outstanding of a left-hander as you'll see," said Florida head coach Pat McMahon. "He'll give us a great challenge. We have a great respect for their entire pitching staff and we'll approach it that way."

I have a small bet on Tennessee to win the tournament at +750.


Hochevar may be the best starter in this tournament, and Tennessee is a solid club overall. They had to take down a really good GT team to get to Omaha. I like their chances in that bracket and I think +750 is good value. If they can get by Florida with Adkins (who has pitched very well in the postseason), they'll have Hochevar saved for their winners bracket game.
