      13) Oregon State had 8-5 lead in ninth inning; if they hold it, they reach College World Series for first time in 53 years. Sadly for them, their rightfielder dropped a fly ball, they hit leadoff batter in consecutive innings, and dropped a 9-8 decision to USC, setting up Game 3, a winner-goes-to-Omaha game Monday at 4.

      12) Has to be tough for the Beavers to compete with the USCs and Arizona States; hell, Oregon Ducks do not even field a baseball team; it is Pac-9 in hardball.

      11) Nationals won their last ten games, all at home- in their last 11 road games, they're 2-9, so we'll see how they do, with Jose Guillen returning to Anaheim, after the Angels fired him during last year's pennant race.

      10) Why teams like the White Sox have seasons like the one they're having; take setup man Cliff Politte- in seven big league seasons, he had a 4.50 ERA, and he allowed hitters to bat .254 against him. This year, his ERA is 1.50; before his two hitless innings against the Padres Sunday, hitters were batting .147 against him.

      9) If he played for Bronx and Joe Torre was picking the All-Star team, Politte would be on the AL All-Star squad next month, but being a White Sox, no shot.

      8) Orlando Cabrera's late father was the first scout to sign Edgar Renteria to a professional contract (1991).

      7) Hee-Seop Choi looked like Babe-Seop Ruth over the weekend, hitting six homers in three games against the Twins. Still a free agent in our fantasy league, with 18 teams and 22 guys on a team, Choi had six homers all season, before this weekend. He now has 12.

      6) Skip Caray's dad and grandfather are legendary announcers, but Skip, despite a great voice, is awful.

      5) Former NFL linebacker Bryan Cox was on TVG this weekend, analyzing horse races; not sure if this is a full-time gig or not, but he did say if he had a horse taken down in Breeders' Cup race, someone would wind up with a black eye, even if it was a legitimate objection, so we're guessing he still might be amateur at this announcing thing.

      4) Are horses today faster than horses thirty or forty years ago? We have this discussion about all kinds of human athlets, but what about horses. If Secretariat was around today, would he still dominate?

      3) Gregg Popovich made superior adjustments; in the first half of Game 1, Spurs trailed 37-35; at the end of the first quarter in Game 2, they led, 30-19.

      2) Spurs haven't won anything yet; Dr J and the Sixers had Portland down 2-0 in '77, and no one had given Blazers a chance anyway, but Sixers lost last four in a row, and the Bill Walton-Blazers became famous.

      1) Royals' starting pitchers are 6-2 since Buddy Bell took over; before he came, they had lost 21 of their previous 24 decisions.............of the thirty starting P's on Sunday, 20 finished the sixth inning, but only nine of the twenty finished the seventh.
