  • Which Dogs Perform The Best

Would like to share with members a paraphrasing from another site:

They’re the best kept secret in baseball: moneyline busts that are breaking the runline banks. And while sportsbooks would rather sweep these dogs under the rug, they’re helping runline backers clean up at the pay window.

Pittsburgh Pirates, Florida Marlins, Cleveland Indians, Detroit Tigers and Milwaukee Brewers are among those moneyline busts equalling cash on the runline, thanks to some close games, strong bullpens, and a little luck.

“But one of the subtle factors that can work for them can be the very fact that they are not good teams. Many times teams that do not know how to win fall into the trap of consistently losing close games. But since they are often taking +1 1/2, they end up cashing tickets in games that they lose by exactly one run.”

No stranger to playing in one-run games, the Pirates are the second-best underdog bet on the runline, grabbing a total of 4.85 units (or $485 to the $100 bettor). Of their 30 loses this season, 13 have come by one run, while they`ve only snuck out five of their 27 wins by one run.

Two of those one-run victories came against the Florida Marlins, whose runline account dipped to -0.40 units (-$40) after Tuesday night, partly because the Fish have been dogs less often than the other four squads. Only once in 34 combined starts, has Florida been an underdog when Dontrelle Willis, A.J. Burnett and Josh Beckett take the mound.

But pitching alone doesn’t win ball games, and a lack of run support has burned backers for a total loss of 5.85 units, making Florida the worst of these five teams against both the money and runlines.

“Bullpen depth of the team I am laying a runline with, especially their closer,” ... takes into consideration when playing a runline team.

“If a bullpen has over a 3.50 ERA, and the closer is struggling or giving up late runs, such as Atlanta`s bullpen right now, I will not consider that team a good runline bet.”

With the league’s second-best bullpen, it’s no wonder the Indians are one of the hottest runline teams in MLB. Indians relievers are 11-8 with a 2.63 ERA this season, and are holding hitters to a .209 batting average.

That’s helped the Tribe to five wins in their last nine games and although they are still 2.22 units in the moneyline hole, they’ve managed seven runline paydays during that span. The Indians are up 5.10 units, making them the best runline dog in the league.
The Tigers and Brewers rank fourth and ninth in pen respectively amongst all major league squads. Detroit has netted a profit of 4.55 units on the runline while Milwaukee has grabbed 3.40 units.

Very interesting. It makes sense taking teams with a good bullpen on the +1.5 RL. They'll keep the game close.
