3 Units on San Antonio Spurs -2½ +100
For the first time this season, San Antonio has lost back-to-back home games and it occurred this week against New York on Tuesday and Minnesota in overtime on Friday. Sandwich in-between was a victory at Dallas. The percentages are with us that San Antonio does not lose a 3rd consecutive game in their own building. The Spurs are 5-1 ATS off a home defeat this year. The Lakers are a mediocre 3-4 SU on the road recently including defeats to Chicago, Detroit, and Seattle (all by double digits). Today’s starting time of 12NOON local time in San Antonio will have the feel of a 10AM game for the Lakers. Since Christmas Day of 2002, San Antonio is 9-2 ATS against the Lakers. In those 11 games the Lakers were only a road underdog on two occasions but lost and failed to cover each in Texas. There should be three serious areas of concern for Coach Jackson. The Lakers are allowing 100 points a game on the road which is well up from their championship seasons. They are no longer a dominating rebounding team with the differential in boards dramatically down from the past three years. They also aren’t getting consistent play from the surrounding cast members outside of Shaq and Kobe. We lay the small number with San Antonio, who should enter motivated off back-to-back home defeats.

                        5 Units on Philadelphia 76ers O 191½ -110
Prior to Friday night’s game, Toronto Coach Lenny Wilkens was asked about the status of starting forward Antonio Davis, who has been hampered recently by a knee injury. Wilkens stated “if this were a playoff game, I’d probably play him.” “Playoffs” as once uttered by Coach Mora. Toronto is now 21-46 after losing at Miami and allowing the Heat to match a season high of 107 points on 53.7% from the field. If you’ve seen enough Miami basketball, you would think the Heat most times would require two games to reach 107 points. But that’s an indication of how bad the Toronto defense is. The Raptors haven’t exactly been minding the cave of late allowing 107 or more in four of their last six. Recently, the Clippers scored 111 points against Toronto with three starters out of the lineup. Philadelphia comes off back-to-back blowout defeats in which they yielded 113 to Detroit on the road and 114 to Atlanta at home. Somehow the 76ers scored 105 points against Atlanta despite hitting just 35.3% from the field. It had to be many Alan Iverson coast-to-coast jobs in less than five seconds. Toronto has now exceeded the total in eight of their most recent 10 games. Philadelphia has recently exceeded the century mark in nine of their last 16 games. Toronto is 10-3 ‘OVER’ this year facing teams that convert 76% or more of their free throws. The 76ers are 10-3 ‘OVER’ this year following two straight defeats. They are 9-2 ‘OVER’ after a home loss. The Raptors are 17-5 ‘OVER’ this season when revenging a 10-point or more loss to the same opponent (17-7 OVER in any kind of revenge). I know we haven't done well with totals lately, but that's extremely unusual. 5* Best Bet Sunday on the 'OVER' between the 76ers and Raptors with two teams really struggling defensively.

                        3 Units on Syracuse -2 -110
In Friday’s victory over Pennsylvania, Oklahoma State shot an amazing 54% from the field. The Cowboys had only converted 50% or more of attempts once in their previous 12 games. In five of their last 13 games Oklahoma State has scored 58 points or less. The Big East Conference is 6-0 SU in the tournament and “The Animal” believes Syracuse will make it 7-0 today. Excluding a pair of defeats against Connecticut, the Orangemen are 12-0 since February 1st. That dozen included victories at Notre Dame and Michigan State, plus a home win against Pittsburgh. Since the February 23rd win in East Lansing, the Spartans have made 51.8% or more of their field goals in five of eight games. Syracuse brings quickness and strength across the board against Oklahoma State which are categories the Cowboys didn’t have much concern with when facing Pennsylvania in the opening round. Friday represented the 3rd cover for Oklahoma State since February 1st (span of 13 games). I like the fact that Syracuse recently went on the road at Georgetown and Notre Dame and out-rebounded those two opponents by a combined 20 boards. Oklahoma State recently was out-boarded 54-34 at Kanas without Wayne Simien in the lineup. The Orange have now covered 5/6 games away from the Carrier Dome this month. It can’t hurt Syracuse playing at the Fleet Center in Boston and knowing they only have to travel to Albany for the Sweet 16 next week.

                        3 Units on Florida -5 -110
After sweeping the opening round in the field of 64, the Pac-10 came within a bucket and double overtime of going 0-4 on Saturday. We suspect Sunday could be a rough day for the Big 10 conference, which was also mired in mediocrity throughout the season. Yesterday we saw Illinois eliminated while Wisconsin needed a miraculous 16-2 run and a last second three-pointer to prevail over Tulsa. Don’t be shocked if Indiana, Michigan State, and Purdue all eliminated today. One of the advantages of Florida being eliminated against LSU early in the SEC tournament last week was giving Coach Donovan’s team a chance to get much needed rest and to heal from nagging injuries. When the Gators lost to LSU in New Orleans, part of the reason could have been a huge letdown after losing at Georgia and home to Kentucky by a grand total of three points. While so many of the round #1 heavy chalk teams struggled to win outright (let alone cover), Florida took care of business by destroying Sam Houston State by 30 points. It was vintage Gator basketball as they made 13 three-point shots as six different Florida players made at least one shot beyond the arc. The Gators won the first half by 14 and the 2nd half by 16. While Michigan State has played better of late, the Spartans are still hampered by lack of weapons. They also struggle at times outside of East Lansing. The Spartans only scored 54 points in back-to-back games in the Big 10 tournament last week. They shot a very unusual 63.2% against Ohio State scoring 72 points at Columbus. But prior to that had tallied just 40 points (32.1%) at Illinois and 53 points (although 52.4%) at Wisconsin. I’m not sure how you score only 53 points when you convert 52.4% but Michigan State found a way in Madison, Wisconsin. Crushing Colorado in game #1 doesn’t mean much to “The Animal” as the Buffaloes have been a notoriously bad road team for over a decade. The problem Coach Izzo faces today is how Michigan State can rally if they fall behind by a significant amount of points. I’m betting the Gators have rediscovered their groove after significant time off and a chance for the team to regain their health.

                        4 Units on Kentucky -14½ -110
Ten days ago Utah lost at UNLV 83-67 in Las Vegas. The Utes prevailed in game #1 of the NCAA tournament against Oregon despite hitting 29.5% from the field. I don’t want to say Utah was lucky but c’mon. Three guys foul out and their #1 player is sidelined and still advance? Oregon’s Luke Ridnour, Luke Jackson, and James Davis went a combined 11-of-36 from the field. That doesn’t happen often. Kentucky is 6-0 ATS this month and 6-1 ATS on a neutral court this season. I can’t see Utah having the athleticism or the weapons on offense to possibly stay with the Wildcats. It disturbs me that we aren’t having the chance to see Oregon playing Kentucky. I was personally looking forward to that game. Kentucky is 11-3 ATS this year when facing a team with a winning record. Now Coach Majerus goes against his nemesis as Kentucky has more than once eliminated Utah from this tournament. This is like the men against the boys. Lay it. This isn't a vintage Utah team for Coach Majerus and although they have played at the level of their competition for much of the season, the Utes are simply overmatched here.
