Pistons (1-0) @ Heat-- NBA needs Heat to win here, or else they could be looking at two very short semifinal round series. Game 1 had total of just 18 turnovers and 22 foul shots, so very clean game. Miami needs to get to line more, needs Wade to shoot better than 7 for 25 and needs to make more than four treys. That was their first loss in nine postseason games; will be interesting to see how they rebound from it. Pistons are champs, and win here makes things very dicey for the team in red/white.

Defending NBA champs are 12-5 in series vs top seeds the next season.

        13) Hank Aaron, fittingly, the first player listed in the batter's register, never hit more than 47 homers in one season, but hit 30+ 15 times. Not only did he hit 755 homers, he had a .305 career batting average.

        12) We associate Sparky Anderson with Cincinnati, but he actually skippered the Tigers for 17 years, and the Reds for only nine. Only once in nine years as the Reds' skipper did he win less than 88 games; he was over .500 his first 11 years in Detroit, but just twice in his last six there did he win more than he lost.

        11) Danny Ainge's major league stats: 211 games over three seasons, 665 ABs, .220 average, two homers, 37 RBI, 37 walks, 128 strikeouts, which explains why he had a pretty long career in the NBA.

        10) Bob Uecker is in the Hall of Fame, for his work as an announcer, not as a player. The funny man got into 297 games over six seasons, hitting exactly .200, with 14 homers, half of which were hit in his "career season", when he hit seven taters for Phillies in '66.

        9) The single greatest pitching year: Bob Gibson, 1968 He threw 304.2 IP, finished 28 of his 34 starts, tossing 13 shutouts. Despite allowing just 49 runs all year, the guy still managed to lose nine games (22-9, 1.12).

        8) 1966-74 was the era in baseball where there was actual competitive balance: a free agent draft for new guys, and no free agency for veterans. Bronx is team that has benefitted most, obviously, from free agency. Here are their records from 1966-74, compared to the A's, during the same period............

        7) Pete Rose, in his 24-year career, had 1,566 walks, 1,143 strikeouts and was hit by pitch 107 times, which adds up to 2,816 plate appearances, five years' worth, without putting a ball into play.

        6) Sandy Koufax played 12 years in the major leagues but really had two different careers..........

        1955-60: 36-40, 80 starts, 22 CG's, one year under 3.88 ERA
        1961-66: 129-47, 211 starts, 115 CG, one year over 2.54 ERA

        5) Koufax retired at top of his game: in his last couple of seasons, he was 53-17, pitching 335,323 innings.

        4) Why isn't Jim Rice in the Hall of Fame? During his career, when watching Boston, Rice was hitter that I always feared the most. A .298 career hitter, Rice hit 382 home runs, knocked in 1,451 runs, scored 1,249. Certainly he was a better player than either Mazeroski or Sandberg, two recent inductees.

        3) Dennis Eckersley had an odd career: from 1975-86 he started 359 games, was 141-128, threw no-hitter; then he became a dominant closer, and for the next 13 seasons, he saved 387 games. Safe to say it will be a long time before someone wins 197, saves 390 again (he saved three early in his career with the Indians).

        2) Dick Williams managed six different teams, getting three of them to World Series, and winning twice with the A's. None of the six teams had won a Series title in the thirty years before he took over, with the last four teams never having won one, at the time.

        1) For fast flameouts, how about Denny McLain? For a five-year period, from 1965-69, McLain was great, with a 107-51 record, winning 31 games in '68, 24 in '69. He was 25 years old in '69, and seemed on verge of being one of the all-time greats, but from that point on, at least partially due to off-field problems, he had a 17-34 mark the rest of his career, retiring at age 28.
