Smoltz said in the postgame that the 8th was too long and arduous (remember he walked one, gave up a few hits and a run) for him to go all the way. He asked to come out; Cox doesn't have a choice.
It's not Cox's fault; his GM gets a closer and Cox uses him to close. The GM and staff of the Braves, although usually astute when it comes to picking up guys (particularly pitchers given the huge success of the Braves pitching in the past 10 years), really dropped a stinker with this Kolb guy.
I don't even bet Braves games that are against good teams anymore because if we have a 1-2 run lead going into the 9th I almost assume disaster is imminent.
