NBA Tip Sheet May 14, 2005
**Miami at Washington**
-- Miami opened up a commanding 3-0 lead in its second round series on Thursday after dropping Washington 102-95 in Game 3 at MCI Center.
-- O’Neal was expected to play, but late news came out that the Heat were going to sit the big fella due to his nagging thigh injury. Oddsmakers quickly dropped the Heat from five-point favorites to two-point favorites.
-- Still, Stan Van Gundy’s team used a 30-19 third quarter en route to its third straight road victory in the postseason.
-- Once again, Dwyane Wade led Miami with 31 points. The second-year phenom also added six points and nine boards. He wasn’t perfect, turning the ball over eight times, but still the best player on the floor.
-- The Jones, Damon and Eddie both chipped in 16 points apiece, while Alonzo Mourning posted 14 points, 13 rebounds and four blocks.
-- The Heat shot 51 percent from the floor, including 6-of-15 (40%) from 3-point land. Miami has been shot 50 percent or better in five of their seven playoff games and a respectable 48 and 45 percent in the two other contests.
-- Antawn Jamison scored 21 points and Gilbert Arenas added 20 points for the Wizards in a losing effort.
-- Eddie Jordan’s team shot a decent 46 percent from the field, but the team was an erratic 34 percent (8-of-24) from downtown.
-- Late in the fourth quarter, the Wizards trailed by as many as 13 points, but closed the lead to 85-82. Sure enough, Jamison, Arenas and Larry Hughes all chucked bombs from the outside instead of taking advantage of the pain without Mr. O’Neal.
-- Thursday’s loss for the Wizards was their first home setback at MCI Center in the playoffs. Miami is 3-0 SU and 2-0-1 ATS on the road in the postseason.
-- Oddsmakers opened Miami as a seven-point road favorite if O’Neal plays, but only a three-point ‘chalk’ if the Diesel sits out. As of Friday evening, most books have the Heat listed as four-point road ‘dogs.
-- Despite seeing Shaq miss his first playoff game of his career on Thursday, Heat backers shouldn’t hop off the bandwagon just yet. Miami is an impressive 7-3 ATS without O’Neal, while the ‘under’ is 8-2.
-- If necessary, Game 5 will take place from American Airlines Arena on Monday.
-- Tip off is schedule for 8:00 p.m. EST, with ABC providing primetime coverage
