  • Sports Pager Question

I wsn't sure if I should post this here or not-thus Wayne or someone please move it to appropriate thread if it shouldn't be here.
I have had the same pager for 5 years-it is a Motorola Advisor 4 lines(you have to keep scrolling down to see everything).
I use it mostly for scores although it has headline news, the Dow Jones averages, etc.
Originally it was run by Airtouch and now I believe Verizon, and there are no monthly fees.
The score updates are ok but not great-I would say every 5 minutes or so;I have sat at my computer and compared them;obviously the computer is better.
I have also tried the internet with my cell phone;the scores seemed to be updated pretty quickly, but I find 1) it is an inconvenience and time consuming to have to go to internet and 2)also it drains the cell phone battery kind of quickly.
Ok-Finally-I would like opinions as to what is the BEST sports pager with NO fees out there is for scores and the quickest updates(that is who provides the quickest scores)(I don't care if it has the regular news, etc.), and where is the cheapest place to buy it?
I have done a little research on the internet, but I want to hear from some of you guys, who know for sure what is the best deal in terms of the criterion I have stated.
    Thanks
ps I have a Samsung V1660 Cell Phone, and would also be willing to listen to anyone who has any ideas as to how to get the scores on it without the whole rigamarole of waiting to connect to internet plus more importantly suing so much battery power if you want to go there constantly.

ps even though I don't want to pay a monthly fee for use of the internet on the cellphone to get scores and updates , I would be willing to pay a small amount IF this is the best option AND anyone has the solution to make the scores QUICKLY available without using too much battery power.
I would prefer the pager method though if it is the best even though it involves carrying around a cell phone and the pager(I have no other use for the pager other than scores and updates).

savage. My pager is thru thesportspage.com I think it costs around $30 a month but I don't know because my offshore pays the fees. All sports update within two minutes and some sports, in just one minute. Their pager is a Motorola Flex which is newer than the adviser. You can see 8 lines at a time, 4 if you use the zoom feature. I'm curious savage, why would a pager company send scores without charging a fee. How can they make money doing that. Just wondering.

        Sandman-Thanks.
In answer to your question, I don't know.
All I know is that when I first bought the pager, it was run by Airtouch amd there was like a $10 monthly fee.
Then I believe Verizon took it over and the monthly bills stopped coming, and I am not asking any questions.
My understanding is (and I have seen ads on the internet) there are some services who don't charge you anything after you buy the pager;I even remember the wording -"Never a monthly charge."
Thanks again-I am going to research that sportspage company(I can't imagine anyone in this day and age paying $30 a month for scores only).

savage. Let me know what you find out. Unless someone is just a $10 to $50 a game player, I can't imagine anyone not wanting to pay one half or less of a single bet to get scores this fast. My gawd, remember the days of calling the score phone at 20 cents a minuite on you phone bill and having to listen to the damn services hype their crap for the first two minutes. When a friend told me about his pager, for $60 a month back then, I got one the very next day.

Sandman-I just checked them, out and it appears that month bill if $15(it says $45 quarterly-that seems reasonable, and they will even convert your present pager to receive their scores in place of one currently received).
I am going to research it further and perhaps buy the newer model;they want $99 for it, but I bet on EBay I can get it cheaper.
Thanks for your advice and comments(what you say makes sense), and of course other opinions and options from others are still welcome.

Sandman-You would be shocked at some of my phone bills back in the good old days when I would be calling every 10 minutes daily, and like you say, it was a lot of bs and ads before you even got to the scores.
Now at least there are some free scorephones with some bs but at least it is "free" bs unlike back then when it ran up the phonebill.

It seems from my research that ESPN has a sports pager available now;that seems interesting also.
For that matter it might be the same as what you have(Sandman).

I know mine is NOT a part of ESPN. Back when my pager company was having transmission problems, I started looking around and I don't remember what, but something ruled out ESPN. Even if some of the scorephones are free these days, by the time you finally got to the scores after having to listen to all their crap, it's already time to get another score update.

Sandman-thanks for that;I am not rushing into anything yet.
You make a good point about scorephones;that is why they are a last resort!

Let me rephrase my question slightly: does anyone have a pager which uses espn, and if so, how good and quick are the updates, and are you satisfied with it overall?

They are all over E-Bay, I just got one for 38.00 and no monthly fees.
It updates scores every 2 minutes, has line moves, Sports weather info and it also tells you how many outs and how may men are on base, it's awesome.
I can hook you up with the guy I bought mine from, let me know. He has several he is selling.

Mets-that would be great;I was about to spend $85, as many are seliing them(the 1250) for $110.
is your pager the 1250 or the smaller model?
Let me know where I can find the guy on EBay who is selling it that cheap.
ps I assume it is the ESPN one, correct?

I'll track down the link on E-Bay and get back to you

My man if you really want a sport pager, let me see how I got mine from. It's a flex motorola and I payed about $135 and thats it. It get the scores and also the lines!
it gave me all the sports even golf. I have had it about 1 year now and still strong.
I have gone out of state and still get all the paged every time the score changes.
                              hope that this helps.
I feel sorry for people that do not drink!
                              Becouse when they wake up,
thats as good as they are going to feel all day!
