                        Preview: Everton-Newcastle

                        Prem Preview: Everton-Newcastle United
                        5/6/2005 4:16:00 PM
BACKGROUND If ever there was a must-win fixture for Everton, it is this one. Three points ahead of fifth-placed Liverpool with a game in hand (mind you, it is at Arsenal), a win would mean the Reds needing to win their last two games – with one of them being at Highbury – to deny Everton fourth spot and an apparent Champions League qualifying spot. With the other game being at Bolton, boss David Moyes will be hopeful they can make sure of their position by the weekend.
However, Graeme Souness’ men will be no pushover, having ended an awful run with an impressive 3-1 win at Fulham in midweek – something which the Toffees never looked like achieving last Saturday in their 2-0 defeat. With Alan Shearer refreshed and Lee Bowyer keen to prove a point on his return from a seven-match ban, the fixture could have been kinder for Moyes,

                        CURRENT FORM

                        Everton (LLWWDL)
Having drawn 1-1 at St James’ Park earlier in the campaign, the Toffees will be gunning for a 12th home victory of the campaign. Two seasons ago they claimed a 2-1 win in this clash in their fruitless bid for a Uefa Cup spot and having secured that this term, they will be hoping to go one step further this time.

                        Newcastle (LLLDDW)
Victory on Wednesday was only the Magpies’ second in nine Premiership games, having struggled in between their FA Cup and Uefa Cup exertions. United have a reasonable record in this fixture in recent seasons, last winning 3-1 in October 2001 although they have only won three times in 18 games on their league travels this term.

                        TEAM NEWS

Everton – A back problem could rule out Tim Cahill, the Australian having been forced off in last week’s defeat at Fulham. Gary Naysmith (ankle) and Alan Stubbs (shoulder) are set to miss out while James Beattie and Tony Hibbert may start

Newcastle – Alan Shearer, rested for the victory over Fulham, could be considered while Lee Bowyer is available again having served his lengthy suspension but boss Graeme Souness will have a long injury list to deal with. Celestine Babayaro (knee), Nicky Butt (calf), Kieron Dyer (hamstring), Robbie Elliott (thigh), Aaron Hughes (hernia), Jermaine Jenas (calf) are all likely to miss out at Goodison Park.

                        ONE TO WATCH

Everton: Mikel Arteta – Impressive since joining on loan from Real Sociedad, the Spaniard will have to be on top form and accept the extra burden in midfield, with Cahill carrying an injury

Newcastle: Darren Ambrose – With two goals in his last four games, the former Ipswich man has been impressive since being recalled to the side – particularly at Craven Cottage on Wednesday.

                        PROBABLE STARTING XIs

                        Everton
Martyn, Hibbert, Weir, Yobo, Pistone, Watson, Arteta, Cahill, Kilbane, Beattie, Ferguson. Subs: Wright, Osman, Carsley, McFadden, Bent.

                        Newcastle
Given, Carr, Boumsong, Bramble, Taylor, Milner,N’Zogbia, Faye, Ambrose, Ameobi, Kluivert. Subs: Harper, O’Brien, Robert, Bowyer, Shearer.

                        PREDICTION
It is a tough match to call, with Newcastle having been boosted by their victory at Fulham – only days after Everton went down to a disappointing defeat. But with a full house behind them, I believe the home side can do it – so 2-1 it is.

Pinny has reduced margin odds at -0.5, -122 and then ML -150...what is the difference....???? Doesn't a tie lose anyway?

Just played it at sportsbook.com at 1.73, draws lose. By the time I wake up, this match should be over. It will be nice to see a winner first thing in the morning.
