Stern should use some of that fine money to investigate some of the refs to find out whether perhaps there is some financial motivation for their making some of those strange calls if you can read between the lines.

is totally correct! In the NBA the EASIEST and non-semi-legal tools used to manipulate totals and spread in games are in order:


The "Refs"
The Coaching staff
The "Trainers"

WITHOUT ANY DOUBT....Refs have obvious control over point spreads and totals and are IMMUNE to criticism or penalties. When was the last time you hear of an NBA OFFICAL being fined for inappropriate calls vs players and coaches "saying the wrong thing"!?

The Coaching Staff can sit a "swing player for rest" when they need either an under or a loss that will not hurt the playoff chances and/or guarantee more TV revenue for a longer series.

The "Trainers" are probably the most underrated tool used by Vegas to "sit a stud player when they need the obivous dog or under to cover" what they need in a mismatch game. False injuries....flu like symptoms....strains and sprains.....alll great excuses to set a player who can influence an over total.

JMHO BUT MUSCLEMAN is right on the money with his insight!

FWIW......Gv (and I still hate unders)!!! (got the over `104 in the first half of the Seatt/Sac game as they usually let em play that much at least)! Look out for a total mess is the 2nd though!!

Maybe Mr. "Self-Righteous" is not all he makes himself out to be.
In short, perhaps perhaps Stern has a "vested" interest in the outcome of some of these games.(obviously just a thought but with the shocking Enron and Worldcom scandals anything is possible).

Do I think NBA players fix games? No, I don't.

Do I think NBA refs have an influence on games? Without any question. I've seen far too many phantom calls and non-calls.

Frank-Thus the key question here regarding the refs is whether they are just lousy refs OR they make calls and non calls deliberately to try to influence the outcome of the game for either tv ratings or other financial inducements.
My opinion is that there is a good chance that at least some of the time the latter two possibilities cited come into play.

IMO mostly because they are lousy. I do believe for various reasons at time they intentionally try to determine the outcome of the game.
