  • Did you hear Charles Barkley last night...

He is not afraid to say that he bets on sports. Last night after the Dallas game was over they were doing highlights of the night and when they showed Vince Carter hitting that 30 foot three to make the final score 108-105, Barkley blirts out "that was a big shot, that shot cost me alot of money" LOL!! The other two in the studio didn't say anything for a few seconds after that. I mean the Big Black Man isn't afraid of anything or anyone and let's everyone know about it. I wanna say that I heard that we won a shit load of money on the super bowl this year. I think that he said it on the Dan Patrick show.

You have to know that these pro athletes are betting on their sports and even their games. I mean if Lenny Dykstra was giving info to someone else to bet you have to believe that there are athletes betting for themselves!!

    Funny stuff!!

It was during the half time of the rockets/dallas game, I heard it to, unless he talk about it twice, he also mention something to Kenny about the halftime line on Jersey to Kenny, but Kenny was like no I didn't saything about Jersey at half, I don't if you recognized that. hehe

I stand corrected. It was at the half. I missed what the 2nd half line comment was. I do tune in to watch Charles for that purpose of seeing what side he is on. The same way that I watch MNF to hear what side Michaels is on when he makes a comment about a score with 1 minute left in a 37-10 game like....."well that score isn't going to make vegas people happy". Or something like that.

      LOL

I admire Charles Barkley for his candor and his great analysis of the teams.
Its too bad that the politicians in this country and the different states other than Nevada don't get the message that some folks want to bet on sports, and that they(the legislators) should legalize it.
If they argue that legalizing it might hurt the integrity of the game more, I would argue that point shaving and attempts to influence the pointspread already go on.
If David Stern wants to bury his head in the stands and pride himself into handing out ridiculously long suspensions to a few players going into the stands and defending themselves, and think everything else is fine with the game(no attempts to "fix" the game, etc.), then that is his problem, and he is not seeing reality.
People are allowed to bet on horses legally, and the time has come for all sports.

Barkley says stuff like that all the time. In fact, basketball announcers out of all announcers seem to be the most in tune when it comes to lines. I can't remember how many times I've heard during a basketball game where there was a backdoor cover, an announcer make a comment about somebody somewhere being sick.

Brent Musberger is a great one for pointing out the spread during somepoint of the game. You will always here him comment that "the pacers have come in here as a 10 point underdog and taken an early lead in this one..."

I mean it is outright stupid to post lines in all major papers, to have segments on ESPN with a guy picking games in the NFL, to have the spreads flash on the bottom line on ESPN, and then on the other side of your mouth tell people that sports betting is legal only in Las Vegas. I don't think that the states realize how much money they are losing by not legalizing sports betting, making bookies pay license fees and report their action as actual income. We are talking about a billion dollar industry that could help states fund struggling programs. What is the difference from lotto tickets and sports betting? Oh I know lotto has an incrediable house advantage!!!!

I have heard Michaels make a comment regarding the spread numerous times, especially when a team scores a meaningless field goal or touchdown in the final minute. Those guys are aware of the point spreads and totals. If people didn't wager on games, television ratings and attendence would take a hugeeee hit, and all the leagues and commissioners know that's the truth. Sportsrmylife, you brought up some great points, and I agree with everything you have said.

Barkley took the Patriots +14 and also the money line in that game. He is also close friends with Belicheck, which means he gets some good inside information on their games. Barkley should become a service because he is a true wiseguy

You are absolutely right about the book manager losing his job over the bet. If I remember correctly or close Barkley was approved for $250,000 line of credit. I wanna say he laid $400,000 on pats +14 and another $50,000 on the moneyline. Well that is some super large money being bet and won!!!

I believe that he only played the moneyline and he didn't front the rest of the money he bet (the line of credit plus the balance) when he made the bet. When the Pats won they didn't want to honor the bet, but they finally gave in cause it was a ton of money. I think also JLo played the Pats moneyline.
Damn Sir Charles has the life. Said he drinks 1 to 2 bottles of Gin every day, doesn't workout anymore (weighs like 370lbs) and gets to make wisecracks a couple of hours a day.
Tell me where do I apply!

For every Barkley there's dozens of Art Schlichters and Cecil Fielder's.
