Nuggets (1-0) @ Spurs-- Vital game for Spurs, who in first game shot just 42% and scored only 35 points in the second half. Denver was hottest team in NBA down the stretch; they took 11 more FT's than Spurs in first game and were +4 in turnovers, while shooting just six treys in whole game (3-6). Over/unders split first 12 playoff tilts.

Wizards @ Bulls (1-0)-- Nocioni had huge game for the Bulls in Game 1, Chicago had just nine turnovers- they held Wiz to 42 second half points in 103-94 win. Arenas was brutal for Wizards, who were 5-19 on treys, 38.4% from floor for game. Chicago was +10 on boards; how will they handle prosperity of 1-0 lead in a series?

Grizzlies @ Suns (1-0)-- Phoenix had 36 points in first quarter, 59-50 lead at half, as they made 15 of 32 treys in 114-103 win; unless Griz can somehow slow place, it will be quick series. Now, 32 treys is a lot, so when the Suns have off night shooting, they're vulnerable, but that is more likely to happen in Memphis. Griz got to the line just 15 times, with only 11 turnovers, so lot of jumpers.

      13) Arizona WR Anquan Boldin, whose 2003 season was great, but whose '04 was injury-plagued, wants a new contract, or an extension or something. He wants more money, anyway; guess who is agent is? None other than King Scumweasel Drew Rosenhaus, who must never sleep, he has so many clients (he might also never leave Florida). Without agents, the world would be a much better place.

      12) A Seattle minor leaguer named Strong was fourth player suspended for steroids; make your own joke, I guess, but a guy named Strong using steroids?

      11) Kansas just signed a $26.7 million dollar deal with Adidas. Kansas; not North Carolina, Duke, Syracuse or UCLA. Big money in athletic footwear business.

      10) As an Oakland A's fan, every time I see Miguel Tejada bat for Baltimore, I want to puke; we gave Eric Chavez $66 million for six years, and let Tejada walk? Stupid.

      9) Lions, on heels of drafting yet another WR in first round, cut Az Hakim, a big free-agent signing from a few years back. Will be interested to see if either the Rams (with whom he won a Super Bowl) or Arizona (with Kurt Warner) sign the former Aztec WR. .

      8) High school hoop coach from Fort Worth named Robert Hughes is retiring after 47 years, five state titles and 1,333 wins. Hughes was winningest active high school coach in America.

      7) Houston 2 games, Dallas 0. Only two NBA teams have ever gone down 2-0 at home and won the series. Is rookie coach Johnson vs veteran Van Gundy the biggest mismatch in this series?

      6) Indiana signed 6-3 junior college guard who made 44.7% of his 3-pointers last year. Two things of note:

      a) The player, Earl Calloway, played his freshman year at New Mexico State for Lou Henson, a former rival of Bob Knight's from his Illinois days, and

      b) This is first JC player to sign with Hoosiers since 1999, which makes him Mike Davis' first JC recruit at Indiana. Davis needs to win next year, and will have a veteran outfit to do so with.

      5) Actually, an additional observation on Calloway/IU thing: Shooters always have been, and always will be very marketable. Hoosiers needed an outside threat after Bracey Wright's shaky decision to enter the draft.

      4) Bad omen for Louis Orr at Seton Hall: Freshman G Cerasoli, who played 21+ minutes a game this season and started ten times, has transferred. With Big East getting way stronger this winter (Louisville, Cincinnati, Depaul coming in), losing players down not enhance one's job security.

      3) The main character in the Doonesbury comic strip is modeled after former Yale/Redskin QB Dowling, who was an Ivy Leaguer in the late 60's, and was a backup briefly in DC.

      2) If I own the Cincinnati Reds, their hats wouldn't be black, or red/black or red/white; they would be red. Royals, Mets and Reds need to lose the black in their uniforms. Willie Randolph wore an all-blue Mets' hat at his press conference, the last time I've seen one.

      1) What does Mel Kiper do for the next 51 weeks?
