Mike Rose Arena Football GOY Sunday April 24th

        New York Dragons
        -7.0 / 10 units

10* NEW YORK (-7) VS. PHILADELPHIA GOY 1:00 EST

As we enter Week 13 of this AFL season, the NY Dragons currently find themselves sitting in the #2 spot in the Eastern Division and on the outside looking in of the playoff hunt. Dallas currently has a leg up on them in the division race even though they beat them earlier this season due in large part to their mediocre play of late. Now, they've lost three games in a row but you have to take a look at the opponents they fell to. They lost by 1 at home to a now streaking Chicago squad, got rolled up in LA in the game that tragically saw DL Al Lucas pass away, and fell last week at Orlando in a highly entertaining game where they were competitive. Now they're back home in the comfy confines of the Nassau Coliseum that's seen them go 4-1 SU and 3-2 ATS. Philadelphia was in the midst of a little run themselves, but has now dropped two in a row and for all intensive purposes are out of the playoff hunt. These teams met up earlier this season back in Week 6 that saw the Dragons escape Philly with a 7-point win after bolting out to a 20-0 lead in the first quarter. A lot has changed for both of these squads since then, which brings us to today's battle. Shockingly, the line for this game opened up at a pick and that was just flat out preposterous.
NY got slammed so heavily that the line jumped to 7 almost immediately after it was posted. I told myself last week when watching both of these squads go down that if NY was any less than a 2 TD favorite in this spot that I was proclaiming the Dragons as my AFL GOY. Well, we're right where I like it as the number of 7 will bring in some Philly money for sure as JQP would love to grab the 7-points with QB Tony Graziani of the Soul. Not so fast my friend, the NY defense is great at forcing INT's this year, and Graz loves to cough them up this season. Besides, the better overall QB plays for NY and he's got a gigantic corps of WR's to get the ball to that the dwarfish Soul secondary won't nearly come close to containing. NY outclasses their division rival in every aspect of the game on both sides of the ball. They also get a bit healthier this week, and just signed WR Todd Doxzon to give the offense even more of a threat. NY is a very solid squad that hasn't played the greatest of ball over the last month. These guys were monsters to open up the season as they destroyed their opponents with solid defensive play, and outstanding special teams play. With only 5-games left on the docket, look for the Dragons to buckle down and get back to playing the brand of ball that saw them reach the top of the rankings earlier this season. With Dallas almost certainly notching a win in Columbus this weekend, a win here is imperative with a road trip to AA Arena looming next weekend. I truly foresee a slaughter to take place this afternoon, and we'll be able to watch it unfold live on NBC. Lay the points with utmost confidence.

          CBS power rankings:

          1 Los Angeles Dodgers
Have major-league-leading .364 on-base percentage. The pupil (Paul DePodesta) is better than the teacher/preacher (Billy Beane).
          2 Boston Red Sox
Curt Schilling doesn't look completely like himself yet, but red-hot Manny Ramirez sure does.
          3 Chicago White Sox
So, did Mark Buehrle cheat fans or give them their money's worth with his 90-minute outing Saturday?
          4 St. Louis Cardinals
They have the third-best winning percentage right now -- with a .231 team batting average. Wait until they get hot.
          5 Minnesota Twins
They have to stop losing to the White Sox (1-3), who look like they are the ones with the better pitching-and-defense mix right now.
          6 Atlanta Braves
Tim Hudson has gotten only three runs of support through his 22 innings. Not a way to welcome the new guy.
          7 Florida Marlins
Their 1.79 team ERA through Monday tops baseball by more than a run, leading the Astros' more human-like 2.99.
          8 Philadelphia Phillies
Their offense has cooled -- playing the Marlins and Braves will do that -- but rotation has a 3.27 ERA and the staff has issued a league-low 15 walks in 13 games.
          9 Baltimore Orioles
Brian Roberts looks like a breakthrough candidate, leading the AL with a .434 average through Monday.
          10 Toronto Blue Jays
Cooled off some after hot start, but with the Nationals getting so much love, we didn't want Canada's lone remaining team to feel forgotten.
          11 Oakland Athletics
Only the Royals have scored fewer runs than the A's, whose 29 extra-base hits are tied for worst in baseball right now.
          12 Anaheim Angels
Dallas McPherson is back up and the team as a whole should get healthy on seven-game homestand this week.
          13 Cincinnati Reds
Pitching staff has given up a major-league-leading 21 homers thus far.
          14 Chicago Cubs
Kerry Wood's struggles have to be frustrating (winless in three starts with a 6.38 earned run average).
          15 New York Yankees
Only the Rockies have given up more runs -- 90 to 85. Apparently a $100 million pitching staff doesn't get you so far these days.
          16 Washington Nationals
A real American Dream? They're just happy to have a place they are proud to call home.
          17 Cleveland Indians
This lineup should not have the major's worst batting average (.220) all season.
          18 Detroit Tigers
This team needed Magglio Ordonez to be considered a real contender, although they are 3-0 since he went on the DL.
          19 Arizona Diamondbacks
Road win Monday night was the team's first in 10 games, dating back to last season.
          20 San Diego Padres
Khalil Greene's loss figures to hurt more than Dave Roberts' return helps.
          21 San Francisco Giants
Their .295 team batting average is the best in baseball, but their team ERA is only better than the Devil Rays and Rockies.
          22 New York Mets
Sure they had won six straight (5-1 at home), but most of those wins could have gone either way.
          23 Texas Rangers
Things would look a whole lot better if not for an AL-worst five blown saves.
          24 Houston Astros
They have scored just one run in Roger Clemens' 21 innings this season; that's about enough to make a man retire.
          25 Seattle Mariners
Here's an interesting one: Which will be higher this season -- Ichiro's average or the M's winning percentage?
          26 Milwaukee Brewers
After opening with three wins, all on the road, the Brewers lose seven of nine.
          27 Tampa Bay Devil Rays
Just when you think you have the Yankees right where you want them ...
          28 Pittsburgh Pirates
Their totals of seven homers and 38 runs are both worst in the majors. At least Oliver Perez can ... OK, get back to us.
          29 Kansas City Royals
Team that lost 104 games in '04 and cut $11 million in payroll is 1-6 in its first homestand, scoring more than two runs only once while batting .202.
          30 Colorado Rockies
Have lost 19 of 22 dating back to last season. At least Clint Barmes is promising.

              SHARK'S WINNERS

              MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL
              Saturday, April 23rd

              SAN DIEGO at ARIZONA
              SDG J PEAVY -R vs ARI B WEBB -R
In tonight's pitching duel, Jake Peavy takes the mound for the Padres, while Brandon Webb pitches for the D-Backs. Peavy (2-0, 1.31 ERA) pitched well enough to win in his season debut, allowing no runs on 4 hits with 2 walks and 10 strikeouts in 6.2 innings, but he did not get the decision in an eventual 1-0 win over the Pirates. He followed that up by allowing two runs on six hits with one HR, one walk and seven K's in an 8-3 win over the Cubs at Wrigley. Last time out, he gave up one run on six hits with one homer, one walk and nine K's in 7.0 innings in a 7-2 home win over the Giants. However, Peavy has struggled mightily at Bank One Ballpark in Arizona, going 1-4 with an 11.22 ERA in five career outings. Webb was 7-16 with a 3.59 ERA in 2004, but he suffered from poor run support, with three or fewer runs scored in 17 of his 35 starts. Over his final 10 starts in 2004, Webb was 3-2 with a 2.59 ERA. He comes in 3-0 with a 3.26 ERA in his first three starts this season, making him 6-2 in his last 13 starts, overall. Peavy has problems when pitching in Arizona, so will opt for the home 'dog D-Backs here.

                The Animal
                Today's Pick: Philadelphia 76ers
                NBA Playoffs
                Philadelphia vs. Detroit
                3:05PM ET.

Nine points is a little steep for Detroit to be giving Philadelphia in game #1 on Saturday. I thought the 76ers played very well this month and certainly earned their way into the playoffs. Since December 4th, the 76ers are 5-0 ATS as an underdog of seven points or more. When you examine playoff history for all NBA teams, it’s a documented fact the best chance for a lopsided underdog to steal a road game is in the first game of a series. Certainly the Pistons are going to be overpriced after their 11-game winning streak and entering the post-season as defending champs. The 76ers won some tough road tilts down the stretch winning at Indiana, Boston, and Washington. They also beat Miami at home in what was a must-win at the time. The Pistons have scored 99 or fewer points in 10 consecutive meetings in this series. That alone makes it difficult to cover this huge number. I don’t know how long Chris Webber’s knee will hold up in this series, but I have to think his best chance in terms of durability is in game #1 after resting it since Monday. Plus who’s to say the hamstring of Rasheed Wallace is healthy and Richard Hamilton could show some rust after recovering from a left eye injury. The 76ers are 4-1 ATS in their last five visits to Detroit and 7-1 ATS in Saturday road games this year. The 76ers were 13-4 ATS against Central Division opponents this season. Philly has enough muscle and size inside to stay competitive and the additions of Webber plus Kyle Korver bombing from beyond the arc gives Iverson some alternatives. Iverson is seemingly unstoppable right now and I like the 76ers chances of either staying competitive throughout or covering with the backdoor. Take Philly +9
