5 DENVER -9' over Portland – The Nuggets were on quite a run before they were brought back down to earth by the Rockets and Suns. However, this is their last game last game of the season and they are facing a team they know they can handle. Denver is 13-1-1 ATS vs a team they beat in their previous match-up, with the only ATS loss a 15 point win over the Hornets when they were laying 16. In fact, the Blazers have double revenge and the Nuggets are 9-1 ATS vs teams with double revenge with the only ATS loss the aforementioned game vs the Hornets.
Denver allowed the Suns to shoot 56% yesterday and we look for them to play much better here, as they are 8-0-1 ATS after a game in which they allowed a shooting percentage that was at least ten percentage points higher than their year-to-date average in their last game -- covering by an average of 10.3 ppg.
The Blazers broke a losing streak with a convincing 100-82 win over the decimated Jazz, in which they shot 54% from the field. However, Portland is 0-4 ATS since 3/7/2004 on the road after a double digit home win and 0-5 ATS since 12/27/2004 when they shot at least 50% from the field in their previous game and won straight up -- failing to cover by an average of 11.0 points per game.
Portland finishes off the season tomorrow at home vs their hated rival, the Lakers. The Blazers will save everything for that game, considering the fact that they are 0-7 ATS before hosting the Lakers.
Finally, checking out the player-based trends, we see that the Blazers are 0-8 ATS on the road after a win at home in which Damon Stoudamire was NOT their leading scorer and 0-6 ATS with at least a days rest after a win in which Darius Miles had more turnovers than assists. Don’t worry about the fact that the Nuggets played yesterday. They were out of that game early and their key players were pulled early -- both Miller and Martin played less than 30 minutes. The Nuggets are a perfect 5-0 ATS off a loss in which Miller played fewer than 30 minutes.
A team without a lot of playoff experience needs to go into the playoffs on a high note. If Denver had their choice of opponent and site for the purpose of gaining confidence and momentum, it would be the Blazers in Denver. The schedule-maker couldn’t have scripted it any better for the Nuggets. We look for a rousing blowout to cap the Nuggets’ great season and send the fans home happy. Lay the points.
MTi’s FORECAST: DENVER 124 Portland 93
