      13) 38,806 fans came to Steve Spurrier's first spring football game at South Carolina, a game that 10,000 or so people have attended in the past. QB situation in Columbia, always a focus under Spurrier, is muddled.

      12) Pitt had a spillover crowd for their spring game, but the game was played at Gateway HS, because the Heinz Field surface is getting new grass. 8,007 folks crammed in to see Wannstedt's first spring game. With a veteran QB, Pitt should be pretty good.

      11) Oklahoma, trying to find a new QB, had just nine first downs on their 21 possessions in spring game.

      10) Virginia Tech had 34,000 people for its spring tilt (Tennessee had under 24,000 for theirs). QB Vick is listed as #3 on depth chart, had strong spring game.

      9) Joe Dailey, who butchered Nebraska's west coast offense last year (45% passing) is now listed as QB#4 in Lincoln. He may wind up transferring.

      8) Of the ten previous teams to start out 3-0 in NFL Europe, nine made the World Bowl, and four won it

      7) In a conversation at the Nationals' home opener on Thursday, Bud Selig couldn't name the starting catcher for the Phillies, but President Bush could. Maybe Bud would do a better job of lowering gas prices than GW

      6) If I was a friend of Dave Leitao, the new basketball coach at Virginia, I would ask him if he really believed that Virginia, an academic school in the ACC, is better job than DePaul, the main school in Chicago, and now in the Big East.

      5) Some are suggesting that there is connection with all this steroids stuff and lousy job closers have done thus far in '05. Steroids aid recovery time after exertion, so some believe relievers may have taken them, and not just sluggers.

      4) AJ Burnett doesn't have his name on his bats, he has names of his favorite bands. Seriously.

      3) Jarrod Washburn's first three starts all wound up in extra innings.

      2) Darren Clarke almost became the first golfer since David Duval at '99 Players to shoot over par in last two rounds and still win the tournament.

      1) Red Sox fans seem to have forgotten that they play the World Series every year, and everyone who wins is really, really happy. Now a new season has started, though, and it is time to move on.
