San Diego (4-3) at Chi Cubs (3-4) 2:20 pm EDT Tue Apr 12, 2005

      --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

San Diego (4-3) at Chi Cubs (3-4)

Game Info: 2:20 pm EDT Tue Apr 12, 2005

The Chicago Cubs are always extra careful with Mark Prior when it comes to his health. After starting the season on the disabled list for the second consecutive year, the 24-year-old right-hander says he's ready to go -- just in time to face another young ace.
Prior will make his first start of the season when he faces Padres' ace Jake Peavy in the middle game of their series at Wrigley Field.

``I feel good and ready to go,'' Prior said Monday. ``I expect to give us a chance to win the ballgame.''

Prior was on the disabled list with elbow inflammation and made one minor league rehab start in Albuquerque with Triple-A Iowa on April 7. He struggled, giving up seven runs in six innings, including six in the first. He threw 30 pitches off the mound Sunday but the Cubs wanted to see how his elbow felt Monday before making any decisions.

After going 18-6 with a 2.43 ERA in 2003, Prior made just 21 starts last season, going 6-4 with a 4.02 ERA. Prior missed the first two months with Achilles tendon and elbow soreness, not making his first start until June 2, when he mowed down the first 13 batters he faced in a 2-1 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates.

``We feel he's ready. He feels good,'' Cubs manager Dusty Baker said Monday

Peavy, meanwhile, continued where he left off in the 2004 season in Thursday's 1-0 13-inning win over Pittsburgh.

He struck out 10 and held the Pirates to four hits in 6 2-3 innings. Last year, the 23-year-old went 15-6 and became the first Padres pitcher to lead the majors in ERA, at 2.27.

On Monday, Adam Eaton outpitched Ryan Dempster for six innings, and the Padres took advantage of Jeromy Burnitz's error to beat the Cubs 1-0.

Eaton and Dempster each allowed four hits, but the Padres scored an unearned run in the sixth when Burnitz, Sammy Sosa's replacement in right field, dropped Brian Giles' low line drive.

Ryan Klesko then doubled off the right-field wall, and Giles scored one out later on Ramon Hernandez's groundout.

``There's really no feeling worse than a defensive play that costs the team,'' said Burnitz, who also struck out three times, twice to end an inning with runners in scoring position.

``That's the worst feeling that there is for me.''

Also on Monday, Cubs second baseman Todd Walker was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a sprained left knee and could be out four to six weeks.

Walker got hurt in the 10th inning of Sunday's 6-5 win over Milwaukee when Carlos Lee slid into second base to break up a double play. He left the game in the 11th and later underwent an MRI, which showed a sprained medial collateral ligament.

San Francisco (4-2) at LA Dodgers (4-2) 4:10 pm EDT Tue Apr 12, 2005

        --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

San Francisco (4-2) at LA Dodgers (4-2)

Game Info: 4:10 pm EDT Tue Apr 12, 2005

Nothing would be sweeter for San Francisco than to spoil the Los Angeles Dodgers' home opener.
The surging Giants, who open up a two-game set with the Dodgers, saw their rivals take two-of-three in the season opening series. San Francisco though has found a new offensive approach, sweeping the Colorado Rockies over the weekend.

Jason Schmidt singled twice in San Francisco's seven-run fifth and gave up only two hits in six sharp innings as the Giants beat the Rockies 11-4 on Sunday.

Mike Matheny hit a two-run double, Marquis Grissom had a two-run single and Lance Niekro drove in a run two days after being called up for San Francisco, which scored 25 runs in the series after being outscored 18-8 by Los Angeles to start the season.

San Francisco got its first run when Jason Ellison led off the first with a bunt single, moved to third on an error and a stolen base, and came home on a groundout to third. The Giants' second run came after two singles, a steal and a runner coming home on a double play.

``We have to do all that to stay afloat,'' manager Felipe Alou said. ``We can't wait for the long ball, even though we've won a couple games with the long ball. That's not us. We have to grind day in and day out.''

San Francisco and Los Angeles are tied atop the NL West, and it seems they could be battling for the division's top spot all season.

Jeff Weaver takes the mound against the Giants again. He was outstanding in the first series' finale, giving up five hits in eight innings in a 6-0 win on Thursday.

``San Francisco will come back with a vengeance,'' Dodgers center fielder Milton Bradley said. ``The second time against Weaver, after eight scoreless innings, they won't want that to happen again. Every time the teams play, it's a battle.''

Los Angeles had a chance to sweep a three-game series with the Arizona Diamondbacks, but lost 5-4 on Sunday.

Two games in the series were decided by one run, the other went to extra innings.

Dodgers manager Jim Tracy was disappointed in his team's failure to take advantage of some scoring opportunities Sunday, leaving 11 runners on base.

``But I certainly am not disappointed with the fact that we've played six games on the road, and we've won series in both cities,'' Tracy said.
