The Phillies and Marlins open a three game set in Florida. Tonight's pitching matchup features Brett Myers of the Phillies versus Al Leiter of the Marlins. Myers (0-0, 1.35 ERA) was 11-11 with a 5.52 ERA in 32 games in 2004 and his 5.52 earned run average last year was the third highest among National League starters with at least 150 innings pitched, and he allowed 13.5 base-runners per nine innings. He did not the decision in his first start of the season last week against Washington in a 7-3 home loss. However, he did pitch fairly well, giving up just two runs on seven hits with one homer, one walk and seven K's in 6.2 innings, but the bullpen couldn't hold on in that one. He has not had the greatest success versus Florida, going 2-4 with a 6.41 ERA. Leiter (0-0, 1.59 ERA) also missed out in the decision in his first start despite pitching effectively in a 2-1, 13th-inning loss to the Braves. In that game he allowed just one run on five hits with one walk and three K's in 5.2 innings of work. Leiter has had mixed success versus the Phillies, going 4-3 with a 3.94 ERA in his last 12 starts against them, but he has now allowed just one run or less in 16 of his last 31 starts, overall.
